Viasat (Formerly Exede) Satellite Internet Review 2021

We dug into Viasat prices, plans, speeds, and data caps to compare it to other rural internet providers like HughesNet. In the end, Viasat is our No. 1 satellite internet pick thanks to its fast speeds and large data caps.

We recommend Viasat as the best high-speed satellite internet choice.

If cable and fiber internet are a distant dream, Viasat satellite internet might be your best bet to live in the country and still get your streaming fix. It’s got quite a few plans to choose from (depending on where you live), and it has higher speeds that often ring in at a lower price than your other satellite internet choice, HughesNet.

That said, Viasat does come with a price hike after three months when your promotional price ends, plus a few other caveats that might make you hesitate. So let’s dig into the details and find out if Viasat is the best rural internet provider for you.

Find Viasat internet plans in your area.
  • More than one speed option
  • Lower price per Mbps per month than HughesNet
  • Three-month price hike
  • Not a lot of data compared to DSL or cable
  • Limited availability for cheaper Liberty plans
Quick note: If you can get DSL or cable internet, it's likely a better deal.
Heads Up

Viasat internet plan prices are high, especially for the speeds they offer. But honestly, those prices aren't abnormal for satellite internet.

That's why if you have a choice between satellite and other types of internet connections, we pretty much always recommend the other types. (Unless it's seriously just dial-up or DSL speeds slower than 25 Mbps.)

Viasat internet prices and plans

Viasat’s price for the speed you get makes it our Editor’s Choice for satellite internet

Viasat (formerly Exede) has a ton of plans to choose from, and at first glance you may feel overwhelmed. But which plan you can get—and how much you end up paying—depends on where you live.

For example, Viasat's Liberty plans are available to a smaller portion of the US than its Unlimited plans.

So, depending on where you call home, you might have only a few Viasat internet speeds to choose from—and you may not be able to choose a Liberty plan. That said, here's a look at all the Viasat satellite internet plans to give you an idea of what's out there.

You might be wondering what other differences are when it comes to Viasat's Liberty plans and its Unlimited plans. Basically, the Liberty plans come with much less data than most of the Unlimited data plans. We dive into this a bit more when we discuss Viasat data caps if you want to skip ahead.

Viasat internet prices after three months

No matter which plan you choose, you’ll want to watch out for Viasat’s three-month price hike.

For most (but not all) of its plans, Viasat jacks up your prices pretty dramatically after your first three months of service. After that, your price locks in for the rest of your two-year contract, but that initial jump is a pain in the wallet.

But even with the surprise price hike, Viasat's prices are better than HughesNet's prices if you need more speed and data. HughesNet plans often cost more even though you get a slower speed (25 Mbps) than you would with Viasat (which goes up to 100 Mbps).

* For the first 3 months.

But we still have to ding Viasat for this—it's one of the worst promotional price periods and worst price hikes we've seen from an internet provider. If not the worst.

Where is Viasat available?

Viasat satellite internet is available everywhere in the US—that includes all 50 states. Alaska, we're looking at you.

And while other ISPs tend to cluster their service around big cities, Viasat's satellites can reach rural and remote areas that may not have any other internet service to choose from.

But, like we mentioned, which Viasat plans are available to you depends on your location. The best way to check is to use our zip code search tool below or take a look on the Viasat site.

Find out which Viasat satellite internet plans are available in your area.

Which Viasat plan is best for you?

Depending on how often you use the internet and what you do online, some of Viasat's internet plans might be a better deal than others. Here's what we generally think each Viasat plan is best for, and we've got a couple more recommended plans below.

  • 12 Mbps: Good for one person who uses the internet to browse social media and send emails.
  • 25–30 Mbps: Good for two to three people who browse the internet, occasionally stream videos, and play role-play games on the side. This speed can also support a home security system with no cameras.
  • 50 Mbps: Good for three to four people who browse the internet, stream video, work from home, and/or game online. These speeds can also support a basic security system with no cameras.
  • 100 Mbps: Good for up to five people who browse the internet, stream video, work from home, and/or game online. This speed can support a home security system with cameras.
Can you really game on satellite internet?
Info Box

Yes and no—your gaming experience with satellite internet depends on what kind of game you're playing.

If you're lining up a shot in a first-person shooter (FPS), the latency that comes with satellite internet might be the difference between landing the shot or missing and needing a res. Find out more in our guide to gaming on satellite internet.

How do Viasat internet prices compare to HughesNet prices?

Even with the surprise price hike, Viasat’s prices for the speeds and data you get are better than HughesNet (one of the main satellite internet competitors out there). HughesNet often charges more per megabit per second than Viasat does.

So unless you're set with HughesNet's low-data-cap plans, Viasat is often the better deal.

Take the most expensive plan for Viasat, Unlimited Platinum 100, for example. It costs the same per month (to start out, at least) as HughesNet's most expensive plan, 50 GB. But it offers a lot more download speed and data.

Let's also chat about internet speed for a moment. Sure, 25 Mbps is technically fast enough to stream even in HD, but that doesn't take into account any other connected devices or people that might use your internet too.

We're talking kiddos with tablets, home security systems, dad checking the latest football scores on his cellphone, or your partner streaming The Bachelor while you watch Family Guy reruns in the other room. Not to mention any smart gadgets you have hiding around the corner. (Shhh, don't say "Alexa" or you'll wake her up.)

Bottom line: The more devices and people using your internet, the more data and faster speeds you'll need.

But even with those high-speed plans, Viasat’s still not a great option for certain online activities like gaming, Zoom and video calls, or VPNs. That's because satellite internet has high latency (measured in milliseconds, or ms), which causes what most of us call lag.

That's just the unfortunate truth thanks to the way satellite internet works. It's going to take time for your signal to travel to a satellite sitting 22,200 miles above your house.

Satellite internet isn't known for amazing upload speeds either. In fact, all of Viasat's plans cap out at a slow 3 Mbps upload speed. So if you hope to use your Viasat internet to upload large files or livestream, it's going to be a painfully sluggish experience.

On the bright side, you won’t notice latency or upload speeds as much for slower-speed internet activities, like scrolling through Instagram. Just don’t try to play Fortnite on your Viasat connection.

Just how much latency does Viasat have?
Heads Up

Typical latency for satellite internet is around 638 ms1 compared to an average of 24–42 ms with DSL internet.

Is Viasat satellite internet fast?

In terms of actual speeds, the results don't look good for Viasat—or any other satellite internet provider. Viasat ranked 37th out of 38 internet providers we analyzed in our latest list of the fastest ISPs. The only other satellite provider we analyzed, HughesNet, ranked 36th.

Just a note: these low rankings are likely due to how we weighted our scores. We take into account download speeds, upload speeds, and latency for each ISP. That leaves satellite internet at a huge disadvantage, since it has slow download and upload speeds, plus high latency when compared to DSL, cable, and fiber internet.

5th out of 6 ISPs

By comparison, HughesNet was 36th out of 38 ISPs overall in our analysis. But some of the differences in speeds between these two satellite ISPs could come down to the fact that some Viasat plans offer 12 Mbps speeds, while HughesNet offers only 25 Mbps plans.

Here's a look at how Viasat's speed scores compare to HughesNet, CenturyLink (a DSL provider), and NextLink Broadband (a fixed wireless provider).

36th out of 38 ISPs 6.6 out of 100 25 Mbps

This table makes it pretty clear why we tend to recommend DSL over satellite if you can get it. But keep in mind that some DSL providers may not offer speeds as fast as CenturyLink—and might be slower than even satellite internet.

Bottom line: Based on what we've heard and what we know about the technology, we think it's best to temper your expectations when it comes to satellite internet speeds. And if your connection keeps sputtering out, try some of these tips to speed up your satellite internet before you hop on a call with customer service.

Data caps

Viasat’s Liberty plans come with 12 to 50 GB of data, while its Unlimited plans come with 45 to 300 GB of “high-speed” data.

Let's take a look at the Liberty plan data caps first.

If you use up all your data on a Liberty plan, you can buy more or suffer through the 1990s version of web browsing with download speeds of 1 to 5 Mbps. But you can buy more data for your Liberty plan.

And what about Viasat's Unlimited plans? The Unlimited plans technically give you unlimited data, but that doesn't mean you get unlimited high-speed data. Depending on which plan you have, you'll get 45 to 300 GB of data that lets you connect to the internet at (or near) the download speed your plan advertises.

But if you go past your data threshold, your speeds could drop to 1 to 5 Mbps during times when there's a lot of internet traffic. You also can't add data to a Viasat Unlimited plan. (Frustrating, we know.)

Can you stream 4K videos with Viasat?
Info Box

Even if you have a 4K TV, you probably won’t be able to stream shows in 4K resolution over a satellite internet connection. Viasat automatically adjusts video resolution to reduce the amount of data you use.

Find out more about how streaming on satellite internet works in our guide.

How to monitor your Viasat data

If you want to save your data, you can do things to use less data, like stream in standard definition (SD) or use Viasat’s own web browser.

You can also keep track of your data usage using Viasat’s app, which you can download in either the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.

Contracts, equipment, and fees

Viasat internet requires a 2-year contract, and some of its fees add up quick

Viasat internet comes with a 2-year contract,3 unless you choose its no-contract option. But beware: To get rid of your Viasat contract, you'll need to fork over $500 up front.4 (That $500 is also not refundable.) Talk about a hit to the wallet.

If you plan on keeping your internet for at least two years, then we recommend just going with the contract. There’s no need to pay half a grand just to be off the legal hook if you do decide to cancel your service.

Your Viasat internet uses a satellite dish and a modem. A professional technician has to install both those things, and that technician will probably be from a third-party contractor.

As for the equipment price, that depends on whether you choose a monthly lease or a lifetime lease.

  • Viasat equipment rental fee: $12.99/mo.
  • Lifetime lease price: $299.99 one-time fee

By the way, it would take almost 24 months for the cost of the lifetime lease to make the one-time payment worth it.

But if you can afford the up-front cost, it might be worth it. Especially if you plan to keep your service for longer than two years.

Viasat modem or gateway

You can use your own router with Viasat, or you can grab the ISP's WiFi Gateway. The gateway acts as both a modem and a router, which is great for connecting multiple devices to the internet through Wi-Fi or with an Ethernet cable.

Viasat's gateway also acts as a voice adapter. So if you have Viasat voice service, you don't need an additional adapter connected to your phone. Decluttering? Marie Kondo would be proud.

Viasat satellite internet installation

Plan on the Viasat installation process taking two or three hours. The technician’s exact arrival time can be here or there, so we’d say just take that whole day off if you can.

When the technician gets there, they’ll attach the satellite dish to your roof (or a wall) and make sure it’s pointed in the right direction so it can communicate with the orbiting satellite. Once the technician finishes installing the dish and your modem, you’ll be good to go.

Service fees

What’s internet without service fees? Here’s a quick look at what fees Viasat might have in store for you.

  • Installation fee: $99.99, but if you’re a new Viasat customer, you should ask about free installation
  • Late or unreturned equipment fee: $300.00
  • Early termination fee: $15.00 per month for every month left on your contract
  • Service call fee: $95.00 if a technician needs to visit your home (unless you enroll in EasyCare)
  • Dish relocation fee: $200.00 and must be at the same address

Viasat EasyCare program

If you want to avoid paying the $95 fee for a service visit, you might consider enrolling in the EasyCare program.

EasyCare costs $8.99 a month, and it offers these perks:

  • Service calls: No $95 fee for any visits from a technician
  • Priority customer support: You'll get access to a special customer support phone number
  • Satellite receiver relocation: Need to relocate your dish? You can move it once a year for $95 (normally it costs $200)

Also, if you're a new Viasat customer, your first 90 days of EasyCare are free.

Customer service

Need to reach Viasat customer service? Call 1-833-242-1877

While Viasat's advertised speeds stand out among other satellite internet providers, its customer service isn't outstanding. Which is to say internet service providers as a whole have some work to do when it comes to taking care of us.

Viasat didn’t earn a specific rating from the latest American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) report. But we can look at the report’s “All Others” rating to get a general idea of how good (or not good) Viasat’s customer service is.

Viasat internet customer service rating5

ACSI 2019–2020 rating

64 out of 100 ("All Others")

To put that in a bit of perspective, the lowest-scoring ISP earned 55 out of 100, and the highest-scoring ISP earned 73 out of 100. So that lands Viasat smack-dab in the middle.

If you look up Viasat or even Exede internet reviews (since some of us still refer to it as "Exede"), you'll notice that a lot of Viasat customers aren't happy campers. Many complain they don't get the speed they paid for, among other things.

Jeff from Dubuque, Iowa, got stuck with slow internet on game night. Needless to say, he was frustrated. "Tonight I am trying to watch some college football and I can't even connect to Hulu," he said. "I ran an internet speed test and it says I have 0.23 mbps download speeds. I have run it multiple times and the highest I got is 0.38 mbps."2

If your Viasat internet is sputtering along too, there are a few things you can try to speed things up before you ring up customer service.

Need help with your Viasat internet?

Before you call customer service, check out our troubleshooting guide if your Viasat internet isn't working. Or try our tips for speeding up your satellite internet. If we can save you the time it takes to call and get help, we'll call it a job well done.

If you do need to get a hold of a Viasat service rep, take a peek at these customer service tips before you call. They might help keep you from pulling your hair out.

Here's how you can get a hold of Viasat customer service:

How do you cancel your Viasat internet service?

To cancel your Viasat service, call customer service at 1-833-242-1877 to tell them you want to cancel your service, return any leased equipment (TRIA and modem), and pay your early termination fee.

Speaking of your early termination fee, you might be in for a rude awakening here. Most Viasat contracts are two years long, and if you cancel before your contract is up, you'll pay $15 for every month left on your contract. Yee-owch.

Summed up, here's what you'll need to do to cancel your Viasat service:

  1. Call Viasat customer service at 1-833-242-1877 and tell them you'd like to cancel.
  2. Return your leased modem, power cord, and the TRIA off your satellite dish outside within 30 days. (The TRIA looks like a small box that sits inside the dish.) You don't need to return your satellite dish or the mounting brackets. If you don't return your leased equipment within 30 days, you'll be charged $150 for an unreturned modem and $150 for an unreturned TRIA. That's a possible $300 whammy on your wallet.
  3. Pay your early termination fee if you canceled before your contract was up. This will cost you $15 for each month left on your service contract.

Is Viasat satellite internet any good?

Viasat is our first choice of satellite internet providers thanks to its fast max speeds of 100 Mbps and large data caps that go up to 300 GB. But that speed and data comes at a high price.

  • Prices and plans: Viasat has a better price than HughesNet if you need more speed and more data. But if you're good with bare-minimum speeds and data, give HughesNet a good look.
  • Speed: Viasat's max advertised speed of 100 Mbps is one of the fastest download speeds you can get from satellite internet. But whether you actually get those internet speeds is another story.
  • Data caps: You'll get up to 300 GB of data per billing cycle with Viasat, but you can't add data to the Unlimited plans. Liberty plans, on the other hand, have smaller data caps but you can purchase data tokens for them.
  • Contracts, equipment, and fees: The price to ditch Viasat's 2-year contract ($500) is a bit outrageous, and fees for installation, dish relocation, and even service calls can add up fast.
  • Customer service: No ISP is known for excellent customer service, so take a deep breath before you call your Viasat rep.

We think Viasat is a good fit for the following types of people:

  • Anyone who can't get DSL, cable, or fiber internet
  • Those who use the internet mainly for email and web browsing

And on the other hand, here's who probably won't like Viasat:

  • Anyone sharing internet with a lot of other people
  • Families who stream lots of videos, game, or use video chat software like Zoom
  • Anyone who can get a DSL plan with fast speeds—or cable or fiber internet

In the end, your Viasat download speeds are probably zippier than dial-up. So keep using those AOL CDs as DIY art installations.

Viasat FAQ

Still have questions about Viasat satellite internet? Let's see if we can help.

Are Viasat, Exede, and WildBlue all the same company? What is Viasat?

Yes, Viasat, Exede, and WildBlue are all the same satellite internet company. Here's a quick summary of Viasat's history, which includes more name changes than Prince or Snoop Dogg (okay, maybe not that many):

Viasat was founded in 1986, and in 2009 it bought WildBlue satellite internet. In 2012 Viasat launched satellite internet service under the name Exede. Fast forward to 2017 and Viasat decided to retire the nicknames "Exede" and "WildBlue" once and for all—now the company and all of its services are just called Viasat.

Monitor your bills after company name changes
Heads Up

As with any company name changes, it's a good idea to keep an eye on your monthly bills to make sure you're not double charged by your provider under both the new name and the old name. One Viasat customer noted they were charged for both WildBlue and Exede service back in the day. Yipes!

How much does Viasat cost per month?

Viasat internet costs anywhere from $30.00 to $149.99 a month for your first three months, and after that it costs $50.00 to $200.00 per month. That doesn't include your equipment rental fee ($12.99 a month) or any additional services.

Is Viasat really unlimited?

Technically, yes, Viasat's Unlimited plans offer you unlimited data. What changes if you go over the listed data "soft cap" is your internet speed.

How slow is Viasat after you reach your data cap?

With a Viasat Liberty plan, your internet speed will drop to 1–5 Mbps at all times if you go over your data cap. If you're on an Unlimited plan, you might still see speeds of 1–5 Mbps during times when a lot of other people are using the internet once you go over your high-speed data allowance. Otherwise, the Unlimited plans' speeds stay the same.

The nice thing about the Liberty plans is that you can add data. On the other hand, Viasat Unlimited plans won't let you pay for more data.

Does Viasat require a phone line?

No, you don't need a phone line for Viasat satellite internet service, even if you sign up for Viasat Voice phone service. That's because the Voice service uses voice over internet protocol (VoIP) technology instead of a phone line.

That said, Viasat now offers a Flex plan that combines satellite internet with DSL internet—and DSL internet travels over phone lines. So to get Viasat Flex (and potentially better internet speeds), you'll need a phone line.

Why is my Viasat internet slow?

More than likely, your satellite internet is chugging along slower than usual if you've gone over your data cap for the month. But problems with your satellite dish, cables, or modem could also be to blame.

That said, satellite internet isn't known as the speediest internet connection on the block.

Even Viasat's "unlimited" data plans come with a data cap. You'll still get to browse the web, but your speeds will slow down to 5 or even 1 Mbps. That is slow. We cover Viasat's data caps and slowed speeds in our guide to Viasat data.

If you're still under your data cap for the month, you might want to update your modem's and router's firmware, then take a look outside at your cables and satellite dish. We'll walk you through what to look for in our tips for speeding up your satellite internet.

Is Viasat affected by the weather?

Yes, satellite internet service like Viasat can be affected by bad weather since your network connection travels through the air. That means you might have connection issues if you've got a big thunderstorm, snowstorm, or even dust storm rolling through.

Even fog and humid weather can technically disrupt your satellite internet signal, but Viasat claims that light rain or dry snow shouldn't affect your service.

Is Viasat good for Netflix?

Yes, Viasat is good for streaming your favorite shows on Netflix. You'll just want to be aware of your monthly data cap—you can limit your data usage by streaming in standard definition (SD).

Still not sure about streaming Netflix with Viasat? We've got more helpful details on streaming with satellite internet.

Can I pause my Viasat internet service at a secondary home?

If you split your time between a summer home and a winter home, first off, lucky you! We'd have done anything to escape those nasty Midwest winters when we lived in Wisconsin . . .

Ahem, but if you have Viasat internet installed at a home that you live in only part of the year, you can opt for the Hibernation plan. You'll need to be a Viasat customer using one of its eligible plans for at least one month before you can enroll, but after that it costs $9.99 a month to keep your Viasat service active while you're away. Here are a few more details you should know:

  • Call Viasat at 1-833-242-1877 to switch your service into hibernation or wake it up from hibernation
  • Costs $9.99 a month plus your monthly equipment fee and any other Viasat services
  • Suspend your service for 2–6 months, up to a total of 6 months in any 12-month period
  • Make sure you've finished up any tasks that require internet before you call! Viasat says your service turns off immediately after you hang up the phone
  • Your internet access is blocked while on the Hibernation plan, but if you have Viasat Voice service, you can continue to use it

Can you cancel Viasat internet service?

Yes, you can absolutely cancel your Viasat service by calling 1-833-242-1877 and letting the customer service rep know you want to cancel. Just be aware that you'll need to return any leased equipment and potentially pay an early termination fee (ETF). The ETF is $15 for each month you have left on your 2-year contract.

  • Exede internet is hands down the worst internet service provider I have ever acquired. Recently signed up and didn’t even take me 2 months to cancel service. Wouldn’t wish the service upon my worse enemies.

  • Absolute garbage internet. I am currently seeking alternatives and would never willingly work with these con artists again. paying 70 a month for this internet and i dont even hit 1 meg speed 90% of the time. if you are given a choice between this and no internet at all, go to a Starbucks, at least your arent charged for the same god awful internet.

  • I must admit that this service is not as would be if it were a cable or DSL connection, but when you are located in a rural area which doesn’t provide any other service that dial-up through a phone line then Exede is one of the ways to go. Data caps are a problem if you are a data hog downloading movies, and contestant surfing of the web (tECKO Kids) then there is going to be big problems and complaints associated. But if you use the system for connection to typical internet usage that doesn’t include constant streaming you will find the system as your best alternative. I have had it for 2 years and data caps have been a problem when over used. Have just went to a 18GB cap which will prove better for my needs.

  • Here are some FAQ I have seen that I have issue with…..
    1. Are there any hidden fees?
This one got me– I have been a customer of excede for 10 months now. I can NOT get a tech to come to my house and check out why I lose service at least 2X’s a day. Why you ask, because it will cost ME $99, now they will give me the option to buy a service plan for $5.99 month but why do I have to pay them to take care of their equipment. I know that it is not a lot of money every month, but still it is their equipment not mine.

    2. Here is another person who wanted service in there area.
“Ha! I just clicked to see if it was vailable in my area. The message I got was “due to the large volume of requests for this service, we have suspended all new service installations at this time. ???????”
They were answered with—- It’s a good thing they are not selling more then they can provide for.
No, this is not good!!!! Here is why.
I do have the liberty 10 plan that gives me data after I use my monthly data amount up.
So if they have a large volume in that area, be careful because this is what excuse you will get to the problem of a service that cuts in and out, ” it is all the Traffic on the signal” again this is THEIR problem and I am not getting the service I pay for.

Now today I called to get someone out to check out if there is a outside issue. I was told once again I have to pay $99 to have them come out and inspect THEIR equipment or I can pay $5.99 a month, again I am paying for them to fix THEIR equipment. Sometimes you just want to scream, why ,why why!!

I feel used and over charged for a service that can be fixed in my area, and they chose not to fix it.
If I did have a choice for Internet in my area I would not have this service.
I do hope that you will post this for others to see so that they really can make an educated decision, because I did not have any reviews that would warn me of these issus.

Stuck between a rock and a hard place

    1. Thanks for sharing your experience. We’ll make a note to include service costs when we update this review.

BTW, is there really no other option for internet than Exede in your area? Also, it might be worth re-posting this experience in the Exede community forum. There’s a lot of active customers there, and someone might have a solution with a similar experience ( Good luck!

  • We used Exede for 5+ years. When everything works, it is an acceptable service, especially if you have no alternative. However, when problems arise (this includes cancelling service, see below), you are on your own and more than likely will be screwed to one degree or another.

The short: use Exede Internet at your own risk and BE CAREFUL. Do not expect anything from customer service reps (even the nice ones). Do not expect advertised speeds. Expect phantom data usage and expect to be given the run-around at every corner when problems arise. Customer service can be decent, but problems they try to solve are often “rejected” by corporate–seriously.

The long: we used Exede for 5+ years and got along okay. It was nice to have high speed Internet, but we often used up our Priority Data by the second or third week of each month, especially as more and more services migrated to Internet-only. We even somehow used data when our modem was off during a two-week vacation. We were on the lowest (20G/mo) plan, and I’m certainly not entirely blaming Exede for us burning through data, but the phantom data usage raised a red flag. Liberty Pass worked fine for a year or so, but by the end of our subscription this past June, usually rendered even casual browsing almost impossible, another red flag.

Thankfully an alternative came along this year. We went through the process of disconnecting our Exede service, then were still charged our monthly fee a few days later. When we called again, the customer service rep said our previous request had “failed.” We went through the entire disconnect process again, plus went through another process to get our monthly fee refunded. Our service is now disconnected, but our request for a refund, while accepted by customer service, was rejected by corporate because our customer agreement states there are no refunds for unused data. It does not matter that our first request came before our renewal date and that it was the fault of Exede that the request failed.

Part of the disconnect process also required us to send back part of the satellite dish, the power cords/supply and modem. It must be received by Exede within one month from the day you request to be disconnected. It has been 20 days since we sent the equipment back and Exede has no record of receiving the equipment. Thankfully, we have our UPS tracking number, so we may have a leg to stand on, but I would not be surprised if Exede finds a way to charge us $300 for not returning their equipment in a timely fashion.

Again, BE CAREFUL. Read your customer agreement carefully and believe Exede will do everything they can to manipulate you into violation. Exede is as dishonest, ruthless and worthless as companies come.

  • AWFUL. Don’t even bother with their services. The satellite wireless is molasses slow – which means we could never get anything to download ‘on demand’ through Directv. Customer service sucks – ask for a supervisor and you get a snot. Seriously.

    1. I use directv on demand all the time and Netflix and Hulu and Amazon no problem. It might buffer for 3 seconds here and there but that’s rare.

  • There customer service is terrible. The modem stopped working I call they said a technician would call with in 72 hours to set up a time to fix it that was 3 months ago still get billed every month but still no one has came to fix it. I’ve called customer service 4 times every time tell give me the same story that someone will call within 72 hours. Every time I call I’m on hold at least 15 minutes. The satellite service is very slow and some how all the data is gone in a week when I hardly use it.
    So frustrated!!!

  • if you are thinking about switching your internet provider, and are considering Exede or Wild Blue, here’s a little food for thought, before you make a switch.
Exede promised us that after our monthly 18 gigs of data were used, that the slower download rate would still be fast enough to stream videos and On Demand from Direct TV.
We had Exede internet installed about 2 months ago…
To this day we have only watched on demand a couple of times before and after our 18 gigs were used because the internet connection is not fast enough or adequate to do the job.
Most afternoons when I get home from work, I am unable to use the internet, quite often it goes down all together. I cannot watch videos from my friends on Facebook, and often have trouble even posting a photo… Right now I don’t even know if I will be able to post this story and pic.
The installer interested in using the existing pole in the ground, that was put in by Hughes Net, required me to pay $15 cash for an adapter bracket to put his dish on the pole.
Exede has contacted us on more than 1 occasion notifying us that our signal was not up to par. They have scheduled techs to come out and repair the issue. Telling us the dish
“needs to be moved or aimed”.
First tech refused to touch the dish, he replace a cable inside my house.
Second tech refused to touch the dish, he tightened up a cable connection at the dish.
Third tech, was the installer, he refused to touch the dish, well sort of. The signal went out the minute he walked through the door. he replaced an electrical part on the dish and the modem in the house. Told us the cable was bad running to the house but would do nothing about it because it ran under the driveway. the dish needs to be moved and a new cable ran.
Fourth tech, replaced the same electrical part on the dish, tried to aim the dish and told us a tree was interferring, the dish needs to be moved and left.
Fifth tech was supposed to be here today 11/11/16 between 10 and 2. I got home before 1, wife and kids were home all day. The wife contacted Exede just after 2, they said the tech was here around 1:40 and no one was home. I was here no tech showed up.
I called “customer service” and there is nothing they can do for me until the next available tech can come here Monday or Tuesday.
We even paid an extra fee to become priority customers putting us at the top of the list if problems should arise.
    That’s Exede/Wild Blue Internet

    1. Ah, thanks for your freedback Rob. It’s hard to hear that customers have had such poor experiences with service, please keep in touch and let us know if your issue gets resolved, or if you decide to switch to another provider.

  • This is the worse customer service ever! They want me to return some piece from the actual sat dish? How am I supposed to climb up a house which I no longer live in? If they would of said something before I moved I might of found a way to get up there.

  • The liberty plan is a joke!!! Everyday, my internet goes out. Whether I have usage left or not. I am so sick of calling these Jacks! Customer service will not listen to what I am trying to tell them. Don’t waste your time or money!!!!

  • Hey, thanks for your question. We’re currently improving our user/customer feedback and ratings interface. In the future we plan on taking user input and directly responding with amendments/updates to the articles. Our aim is to provide an evolving knowledge base to help find the right service for individuals.

As far as your situation is concerned, if you’re currently unhappy with Exede we’d recommend giving HughesNet a shot, as they (currently) have better prices, speeds, etc.

    1. Well it has been 4 months since this post and it has not gotten better. Exede knows that a lot of people don’t have a choice in the matter so ofcourse you would say that..

    2. yeah – I am looking at this site to consider Exede. Sounds like they have all the same problems that Hughesnet has – the worst customer service on the planet. Sounds like both have a potentially good system that works well sometimes and leaves you high and dry many times. I’m now searching for something other than satellite -no wired services out here – there is one reflecting microwave I am going to check out…???

    3. When a service provider refers you to another company, don’t get service with them. If you have a contract get out asap!! I came here to pursue exede service and read the reviews. A comment like this from a employee made my decision for me!! Not a chance your getting my business!

  • So here is what every customer should be told regarding Exede Internet. This service is not for everyone. If you game, you may experience delays. If you stream movies (netflix and such), Exede IS NOT FOR YOU.
I am a self installing Exede dealer. I have turned away 10 customers in the last 2 weeks because they want to stream video (netflix, amazon). You will blow through data fast.
My speeds are consistently 20 mBS download and 4 upload (some days a little slower some faster). Today I am at 13 download and 6 upload.
You – the customer – need to understand this. Me the authorized dealer – well I am clear with the customer about this.
VERY important, the quality of service will only be as good as the installation. If the installer takes short cuts, does not align dish properly, or uses unsupported materials then you will suffer poor service.
If you have cable internet in your area then I recommend you use it as there are no data caps. However if you have limited options then this is a fantastic service as long as – you the customer – do not push the threshold of data usage.
Below are some screen shots of recent speeds monitored over several days. Today we were 13 mbs down (more than likely due to heavy snow), but the speeds are still higher than those advertised.
Look me up at green wave ventures bradford pa on facebook

    1. s there someplace we can fill out the user review? I have a feeling it’d be a lot lower than the generous 8.3 rating XD. I’ve had exede for almost 6 years, my advice, don’t get it, all satellite internet is awful because they know you have no alternative so they can treat you like absolute garbage.

  • Exede internet is good. What is NOT good is if you call the company, you get several different answers AND they don’t seem to be organized at all. I called to have my internet switched back on after I moved and I couldn’t get it to work. I called them and they said it is turned on. I asked them to send a technician because I could NOT get it to work. The technician came out and said, “well, no wonder it doesn’t work; it’s because I didn’t have Direct TV” (which I did get conflicting answers about that question). Come to find out, they hooked my service up at the address I moved from and they took my money (they are good at that). AND they REFUSED to give me credit for that money. I opted to let them go and get another service. They send me a letter telling me, “we hate to see you go; what can we do gain your service back” so I figured I would give them one last shot. I called and I spoke to THREE different people and they STILL REFUSED to refund so I decided it was DEFINATELY time to move on. They charge way too much money anyway but they took me for $88.00. Then I get a bill for $414.00. I called to ask them why and they said I didn’t return the piece on the dish from my roof!!!! THAT WAS THE FIRST I HEARD ABOUT THAT TOO!! I told them I am 60 plus years old and I’m NOT climbing on my roof. They did send out a technician to pull it off for me. I’m going with another company with NO CONTRACT!!

  • Exede is the WORST company I’ve ever dealt with. I tried to disconnect 3 different times, was hung up on twice after waiting 45 minutes. Long story short, I have been charged $1035.00 FOR SERVICE I NEVER USED. and some how cant be refunded? 8.3 stars? I am reporting them to the Better Business Bureau.

  • This whole service is a joke. I started out with a cheaper plan and quickly had to upgrade. The speed was so slow we couldnt watch a movie even if we still had data to use. Called several times and complained and nothing was done. Then I upgraded to the Fastest and biggest plan plus paid additional money per month for the faster service which required a new modem. now im around 120 a month for internet. They turned the old modem off and left me for a week without internet till i got the new one. No credit applied.. Then after several calls over a few months for speeds at a whopping 1 mbps to 3 mbps I had enough. It wasnt worth having. I disconnected the modem before my next billing cycle ended in the meantime they took out a payment of $109 out of my account i called to cancel 3 days into my new cycle and they wont credit me for that whole month plus i had to pay for early termination fee. They said they couldnt remove it with out running a test. They had already run several tests in the months that I had called and complained for that slow of a speed and I was told it is what it is. So to top this off I switched to dish network internet and tv. I specifically asked dish if they had anything to do with exede and they told me NO!! Liars!!!!! I get my new dish stuff installed and what do you know slow speeds. Had tech come out and look at it. I look at the modem and what do you know it says Viasat the same second company name exede has… Its the same through dish network now im stuck again. I now have an attorney and I will be taking them to court for several different things along with dish tv. I had tried to work it out with exede but they said they didnt care..

  • While I used Exede for my mountain home for 3 years and when I called to disconnect they basically begged me to stay. The service was very slow with high latency that many devices do not work well with mainly voice and video so for basic web pages and loading your ereader with a book occasionally its ok . Besides the fact you have limitation on data the speed and latency is awful. I suppose if its your only choice as it was mine until recent its better than nothing although barely. The cost is outrageous and they practically ignore you if you attempt to disconnect they also charge a full month even if you disconnect 10 days into the billing cycle. Ive never been billed for a service I was not getting until now Satellite ISP are the biggest ripoff out there . I recommend exhausting all other options before signing up for a 24 month contract.

  • This is the worst Internet service I have ever had in my life. We just moved out in he area and this is all there was till the week after we signed up and found out that we could have fiber optics. I agree with every one else. Michanel how do you sleep at night knowing you are ripping people off of there hard earn money. You ill me, people like you are usually called rats. We are very disappointed it this service. There is nobody up at 3 am to 8am that would be able to benifit from the great service you say you have. I have lawyer friends that would gladly love to take you down. We want out and we are not paying you any cancellation fees.

  • Your an employee typing something about a shity company that suck the money from people. What a joke if like this Internet bs.

    1. Haha I am not affiliated with excede. What does a joke if like this internet bs even mean. The internet from them is bad compare to dsl or cable, but they tell you that up front. You obviously have no concept of what a satellite is.

  • First, I would like to say that of all the “review” sites I have run across, is the most fair and balanced in their product reports, … Thank You for the time and effort you put into this.

On the Exede forums there is a class of customers known as “Champion”. Be careful with them as many are overly zealous “loyal customers” who will shoot you down if you try post any factual information that makes their favorite company look less than stellar in their eyes (many are not internet savvy). Example:
    (yes, Exede closed the topic)

Not all of the Champions are like this, just be careful when dealing with them as some are less than helpful. I could even say that some of them may actually drive away customers who are only looking for some decent customer support (I have butted heads with them before). In my case, I am looking for Exede to upgrade their service and provide a bundled billing plan (phone+internet) that is less than what we are currently paying.

I have been a customer with Exede since July 2012, when we signed up with an Exede12 10Gb plan and have upgraded that twice to their Exede12 25Gb plan, … that’s 5 years as an Exede customer. We have been fortunate in that we have had fairly good service with only minor drawbacks:
    1) their data use monitor needs work, a lot of work. Instead I rely on RealityRipple’s Satellite Restriction Tracker for a more accurate breakdown of my data usage. Ironically, the application queries the Exede site for the actual data use, … go figure.
    2) as mentioned in the article, their customer service for the phone number is abysmal (overseas call centers can actually drive customers away), the CS for their online chat is much better, and for their customer forums I advise you pay a priority of your attention to the Exede employees before anyone else.
    3) when we originally signed up with Exede, they used Google for their email service, this changed a few years back when Google changed their pricing plans and they went with a much less robust email service. My advice, use it for your spam mail and sign up for a Google Mail account, … much more robust and best of all, it is free.

Currently our household is undergoing a financial overhaul due to a minor tragedy and we are looking to pair down some of our expenses, … issue #2 and current pricing plans have me leaning away from Exede. I will give them a month or two for them to get their new satellite up and running before making a final decision.

  • I could not agree more. Last 3 months thay have been burning me for my 18g. Telling me it is my fault for using it in 5 to 10m. Wait,…… what?…. how is that possible at 25migs per sec. I don’t even get that speed here. Talked to customer “care” and I have had them put me on hold for 45m and then hang up on me. The only thing keeping me in is liberty pass. Or I would be out.

  • I am sure many of these reviews are legit but there is something fishy about a bunch of them, like it was one angry person or competitor posting again and again under different names. Many use identical wording – “worst internet service ever”. Several of them even keep capitalizing “worst”. I’ve got no bone in the fight, I’m leaning towards Hughes.

    1. Yssup, Get Exede internet then come back here and tell us if it’s not the “worst internet service ever”. If you’ve never tried it, then you can’t comment on it. People are losing a lot of money and there sanity on these money grabbers…. So yea, I would think WORST internet service ever would explain it just fine..

  • Well……. You know so much about excede…….. makes me think that you work for them. Well good, for all to see…… do something about customer care. Do something about issues people are having and fix them. Don’t tell people it’s their fault. Ya, I woke up this morning thinking, I am going to call exede today to mess with them and them lie about it on the web. You honestly think people have time for that. So if you do work for them, maybe let Corperit know the issues people are having instead of bashing people on the web.

    1. I think the majority of people are mentally stupid and have no idea as to what’s going on. They sign up for stuff they know nothing about and than complain about it. Excede is upfront about thier contract.

      1. They are not upfront about their contract. The only thing I signed was the installation paper from the local installer. Phone has went out 6 times in 5 days and speeds are terrible not even close to the advertised speed except at 4 a.m. Even then I tried watching a movie with not success. I was streaming HD movies at between 2-3 mbps with my old provider. I wish would have never had them install this junk. Phone service has gotten terrible at my house lately and my other internet was a mobile hotspot. Thats why I was looking for a new isp. I have more important things to do than call them every day to tell me they are working on it and nothing ever gets fixed. I spent 2.5 hours on the phone today there are a lot of things I need to be doing besides being on the phone with them.

  • I had to get exede due to lack of internet providers. I have AT&T at home. It is unlimited, 50 Mbps for $50 a month. I had Cox for $60 a month in in LA, 50 Mbps unlimited. This is. Costing me $85 a month for 12 GB per month then it slows down to 1-5 Mbps when you reach your limit. It’s a joke. The good news is the joke will be on them. AT&T is building a fiber network here and we are working on the project. Affordable, truly high speed internet at an affordable price will be available in the San Antonio area soon.

    1. We recommend trying our ZIP tool to see what other internet providers are in your area besides Exede. BTW, you’re pretty lucky to go from satellite internet (Exede) to fiber internet.

  • Trust me it could be a lot worse I to live in the country and this is one of our only options instead of this I have Fox Valley Internet Literally the worst internet ever It promises 1.5 mb/s in our area I have had my downloads drop below into bytes and sometimes disconnect out of nowhere for hours on end nothing could be worse than this internet. I average 30 kb/s of download speed and peek right under 200 kb/s. And we are not talking satellite….

  • I very much agree with what everyone is saying. I was promised something that a year later have still yet to see. The only reason i signed up with this company was because they were the only internet company who offered internet in my area. And to be honest if i had to choose not having internet or sign up with exede again i would rather not have internet. Ive been paying $97 a month for something that i am no longer using. Ive been using my tmobile hotspot from my phone which is way faster and at that im still getting an email from exede telling me ive already used up all my data in less than a week might i add. And im not even connected to it. Tbh when someone askes me if this internet is good and if i recommend it. I tell everyone they would be better without internet then pay close to $100 a month for something that doesnt even work and is super slow.

  • I hate Exede, I’ve wasted a lot of money dealing with them. I don’t recommend this company to anybody!!

  • Make sure you want the service and there is nothing else around. I had the service for two months and it would give me .5megs for the download when you ran out. I have Att on my cell and went with sprint for a portable wifi and went up to 4megs ave. I spent $320 to buy out of my two year contract. Service went down a lot too and for service in the area.

  • DO NOT USE THIS INTERNET PROVIDER!!! The worst company I have ever been in contact with. The internet it terrible, I have had problems the day I got the internet installed. Trying to cancel and they are telling me I am responsible to climb my roof and retrieve equipment off my dish!!! What a joke

  • Worst Internet service I ever had. Got it and was told it would run everything I needed it for, tv, tablets…after first 3 days ran out of Internet. Due to the 2 year contract I couldn’t get rid of them. Spending over a year using our phones and tablets as mobile Hotspot for everything I finally cancelled. So not only did they charge me $15 for each remaining month, which was fine. They also charged me for an extra month of Internet and wouldn’t even let me use it. Girl told me in a month I would get billed the fee for early termination, when in fact later that day they charged me both that and the extra month.

  • I want to be part of that class action suit. They’re are nothing but liars. They tell you one thing and do another.

  • This service is THE WORST. Not only is their performance sub-par, they informed my 84 Year old Grandfather that he would have to climb out onto his 2nd story rooftop to remove a “vital piece of equipment” that they need returned. We gave it a good solid effort too. they told us that the piece was held on by 2 Phillips screws… it was bolted to the extension arm and extended way over the ledge of the roof, oh but they can send someone out for an extra $95 bucks to remove it for you… what a crock. honestly if you have other options. use them. Hell a Mobile jetpack from your cell phone provider wold be better than this absolutely absurd provider and their ridiculous demands.

  • Wow “pops” angry much? I’ve had exede for 2.5 years, I run a business from my home, my satellite TV is connected with 2 tvs, Netflix, Hulu and Amazon, laptop, desktop, tablet and phone all connected. I pay 116.00 total for 150gb allowance and I rarely get close to that usage even when I watch a lot of Netflix or the other services I subscribe to. I remote into customers computers daily, no problem. The month I had issues connecting it was my own router that was the issue. Went out and bought a new linksys router for around 50 bucks and was up and running in seconds of setup. Last month I don’t know what happened but I think I watched more movies than normal and I hit the 150gb in 15 days so rather than buy more data I decided to wait around decided to wait and see how badly my service would slow down. It slowed a tiny bit but not enough for me to buy more data. I just couldn’t watch anymore Netflix etc till the new month started. Big deal. In my community all of my neighbors have the local provider and they’re down 3/4 of the day, I’m not. Sure, it’s more expensive but worth it. And no “pops” I’ve don’t work for exede nor have any affiliation with them either. Sucks to be you I guess huh?

  • Wrong. Not the only one who likes them. Posted this above in reply to someone else I’m not one of their workers…..

  • I have never posted comments regarding service that I have received from a provider. I always figured that for every bad service that I received, I was likely given better service than I deserved elsewhere. However, when it comes to Excede, I felt that, by posting my experiences with them, maybe I could prevent someone else from having to endure the same. This company (Excede) is the worst that I have ever dealt with. Their speeds are so slow that it is virtually not usable. The customer service is terrible. They have prepared various excuses for when you call that are meant to blame anyone, including you as the customer, or the weather, or all users in your area cumulatively, etc. They have not once ever sent a tech to my location to check their initial install, nor have they tried to eliminate any problems or improve the situation. I have made them acutely aware that the very day my contract expires, they better have a tech be there to recover their equipment. If they do not, that equipment will be treated precisely as it deserves – as garbage. I would recommend, as strongly as I possibly can, to avoid this company – even if it meant doing without internet. Because you will simply be tossing away good money for nothing. This company is not worthy of even a -1 on a scale of 0-10. Heed this warning ir be bitterly disappointed.

  • I would not recommend this service to anyone. I was on the phone last night for 19 minutes trying to resolve a service issue. The rep put me on hold and 1 hour and 30 minutes later never came back on the line.

I complained on their Facebook page and requested a call back from corporate so I could discuss us amicably parting ways and they simply responded that they would provide me a month of free service. I paid for service on Aug 8th as I do every month and have yet to have internet service.

I’ve had to have a tech come to my house 5 times. I was there three of those times, which cost me money bc they only service my area on Thursdays and I have to take off work to be there. I had my mom go one of those times when they were supposed to be there between 11-2 and they never showed up. And as I was having dinner with my wife they decided to show up. Their excuse was that they had to drive from Phoenix and weren’t even remotely apologetic. They came again yesterday, even though I told them I couldn’t accommodate them on a Thursday. Proceeded to do the work anyway. Tore the old post out of the ground. Made a mess in my yard. Left foam from the previous hole. And the issue still isn’t fixed. I’m beyond frustrated with this company, their lack of professionalism and their lack of consistent service.

Do not proceed with this company unless you have no other choice and you’re willing to have your service down for long stretches at a time. I would never do business with this company again and regret that I signed up to begin with.

To make matters worse, the company isn’t making any money off my service. If they are sending a service rep from 11 hours away to service my account it is costing them a lot of money. Why would the company want to continue this relationship if it isn’t beneficial to either of us?

Do not get serviced by this company. You will regret your decision.

  • Exede its a scam!!!!!!!!

They make you agree with a contract of 2 years and they send a technician to do installation.

After that, a lot of different problems take place. Speed its slower than the offer, internet drops and does not work. Another issue is that they run to do the installation first than DIrectv and EXEDE promise that you can use the same Antena (Dish) for Directv and Exede so they can start the contract. However, it is impossible to use the same dish for both services. Also, my community does not allow a second dish. I call EXEDE the same day DIRECTV give me the explanation of one dish per service and Exede does not care and they will charge me 2 year contract if I want to cancel the service.

  • This service is the worse I have ever purchased. Extremely slow even when on liberty plan. They did not live up to the contract by delivering enough speed for basic internet search. It’s like old dial-up and they expect time to pay to cancel.

  • I agree with the customers that are unhappy with Excede. If their service is so great, why lock you into a two year contract? Why don’t they offer a 30-day grace period to cancel if the customer is unsatisfied with the service. All companies have something like this. I didn’t read the fine print. My husband signed us up thinking it was the only choice. Companies like this do take advantage of the consumer. I am complaining to the Better Business Bureau and would encourage more people to do so. Excede charges high rates and provides low quality service. Don’t sign up for this service. It is not the only choice as I have found out. You can use your cell phone service like Verizon and get a hotspot. We are going to do this because Excede is just not working for us. We tried to cancel after one week, which is how long it took to go through our data plan which wasn’t the best to begin with. If you’re used to unlimited plans like what Comcast offers, you will be thoroughly disappointed with Excede and join the rest of us on this blog.

  • Have been without internet for seven days. Much longer than usual. Exede will come out to repair ‘their’ equipment and restore the service we are paying for ‘if’ we pay them $93. HORRIBLE service!!!! Slow internet speed from the start. No service if it rains, or the wind blows.

  • This could be a book, but I will try and keep it in a nut shell. We live in a rural area and options for internet are minimal. Two years ago we were forced into trying a satellite based internet and chose Excede. $80 got us 12 Mbps which should be enough considering we don’t do games, rarely stream anything and mainly surf the web, some YouTube and order a lot off eBay and Amazon. When reception was good it really wasn’t too bad and speed when the internet was working wasn’t bad either. In 2 years we were able to download one movie, which took several hours, and our 12 Mbps was spent. We tried about 2 other times and couldn’t even get the movie to completely download because the 12 Mbps would be completed before it was done. The first 6 months, or so, I was on the phone with them monthly trying to determine what was going on with the way they counted usage, returning equipment that failed once, and finally just concluding it wasn’t worth my time and aggravation to continue the monthly inquires. Spent the next 1.5 years living under a contract with a ½ working internet provider and paying out $80 a month for service that wasn’t there. I finally get down to the last month and call and tell them I want to cancel service because it was inadequate. They told me that they needed the modem, cables and the little box up on the dish that they put up so I would have an equipment charge. I told them they were welcome to come get it because they put it on the second story. They said there would be a $95 service call and they would not be taking or removing the dish. How convenient! Begin 60 years old getting on my roof is not wise, I have to dispose of their trash and repair the holes in my roof. Looks like I have to hire someone to do their work because I have already been robbed by them over the last 2 years. Also, since I called a month ahead and told them I was canceling they went ahead and turned off the internet completely a month early, did I mention that I am still paying for that last month so I don’t have early cancelation charges on my final bill. Moral of the story, if you have any other option try them instead of Excede. We are now going with AT&T hotspot and so far it appears to be working ok.

  • I agreed to use this service because I moved to a very rural area and had no other options for decent internet. I was okay with paying a little extra per month, since it was better than nothing.
However, every time there was an issue with payment, or any issue at all, the customer service was horrible. The most recent issue was with paying a late payment online. I paid the overdue balance, but the website said that my payment wasn’t processed and I should check my payment information. So, I re-entered my payment information and it still gave me that same message. I waited a little while to see if maybe it went through after all. When it didn’t, I contacted the customer service department and they stated that both payments were actually processed. I asked why they allowed the second payment to go through if the first one worked and they said there was nothing they could do.
They refused to give me my extra money back and no am having issues with my bank regarding fraud so I can cancel the charges. They were not interested in satisfying my problems. They were only happy to take as much money as they could from me and not worry if I was happy or not. Needless to say, I will be terminating my account with them immediately and would definitely not recommend.

  • I was an exceed customer for five years always paid on time. A few months ago I cancelled the service due to financial problems, I was paid up owed nothing I was sent box to return equipment, my 71 year old husband climbed on top of the house to retrieve the piece off disc took modem wires everything concerning excede boxed it and mailed it. Then two months ago $157.50 was taken from my bank acct in which I called excede and was informed I didn’t return modem I explained I did bc house much sense would it make to climb up on top of the house and send that and keep the pieces inside the house which couldn’t be used for anything else. WANT told to call back in a week would investigate, so after calling several times with same response they finally made a decision no refund it wasn’t there . Now this is a lie and if they can do this to an elderly couple what will they do to you. So this is a warning to everyone think twice before you get this service, they are crooks bc they know they got everything back , they know they were wrong and to take that money from two people who live on a fixed income show a lot about them. They then bc we are old they can get away with it and they may buy this old woman intends to fight them through social media and the better business bureau so again WARNING DONOT GET THIS SERVICE THEY ARE CROOKS

  • This internet is CRAP!!! To start off the installer put a giant hole in my wall. They promise all this crap & have nothing to show for it. Have called them goodness knows how many times & magically every single time we call there’s an “outage” in my area for 4 months straight. They haven’t done anything to fix this “outage” what so ever. They also let their employees back into our internet & we have an open criminal case with our pd because we caught them in the act. According to them I use all my data in 30 mins when I’m not even home & nothing is running on it. Their only locations are 2 states on the west coast & Mexico. We’ve had supervisors call us dumb ass liars & refuse to do their job. I can’t wait to get rid of this internet & have warned everyone I know not to get it. Waste of time, money & energy. By far the worst company I have ever dealt with.

Where can I sign up to be part of that lawsuit?

  • I just switched to the unlimited high speed for 100/mnth Because the liberty 10 was a joke. Exact same speeds, exact same horrible fuzzy picture, no difference at all. Cannot use this internet for Sling TV at all. It simply does not work. Save the aggravation and just pay for cable. Exede is the absolute worst option out there is on the market. Period.

  • I got a bundle with direct tv and excede internet when I moved to my rental house on 8 acres. Direct tv could not support service at this property so I canceled excede internet. They are now wanting almost $300.00 to close the account even though I never used the service. Customer service is the worst.

  • Exede/wild blue is the WORST service buyers beware 2 year service contract required and should you move within those twice years your contract starts over your required to get on the roof and take the trans meter off or pay 100.00 for them to take off. At commute time service is so slow. Company only has 10 megabytes if you go over they drop it to 5 megabytes and then services don’t work!!! Buyers beware

  • Human errors are rapid with Exede. From day 1, they have gotten my email wrong, name wrong, phone number wrong, billing wrong (more than twice), and service calls wrong. Only thing they are good for is fast speeds that will turn off completely around 11:00pm every night because of “maintenance”. Almost every night for years. Really sucks that I’m stuck with them

  • Terrible service….they don’t show up for appointments….then the representatives offer discounts that are not reflected in their billing…then when you try to get to the botttom of that…you get even more of a run around….worst company I’ve ever had to deal with.

  • Terrible!!! That’s all that needs to be said. The plans do not give you enough data to do anything and the unlimited plans in my area are not even close to affordable! The customer service is just as awful! And the only way the take payments is by logging onto their website each and every time! Unless Exede is your absolute only option I would STAY AWAY!

  • These clowns ruin the siding on my house putting up the satellite. Then the service is horrible. We had better luck with dial up. Customer service was no help and very rude! They do not stand behind there equipment at all. They sold me a faulty modem and wants to charge me to replace it. I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone.

  • Had service for almost a month, 25 mb unlimited plan, not even a week in the net got slower, and for the past week and a half i’ve been getting max speeds of 10 kb/s , yes KB/S not MB/s talk about spending 10 hours+ to download a file thats less than 300mb big. DO NOT GET is my advice

  • There are so many talks of lawsuits on here. We are actually getting a lawyer. After cancelling service they fraudulently debited my bank account. Then sent equipment charges to collections (all fraudulent I have documentation!!) The collection place said nothing they can do, now we have go pay a lawyer (which I will do over $300 friggin dollars) because this company is a complete SHAM!!! internet never worked anyway!!! Everything about this company sucks! I hope everyone files a lawsuit this business needs to be shut down!!!!

  • Join me up for the class action suit. I have had nothing but trouble with this money sucking outfit! Cancelled 2 months ago and they just charged my account another $161.

  • DO NOT USE EXCEDE OR VIASAT FOR YOUR INTERNET! 2 months ago I was told I used all my data in 2 days, thought that was pretty interesting as we were gone and nobody was at our house. We don’t stream, hook up to the tv or have any neighbors within 1/2 mile. When I confronted them all I got was double talk and a promise to look into it. They gave me liberty pass and told me how fortunate I was….didn’t bother telling me I was on an old plan that cost twice as much and got 1/2 the data. Go to your cell carrier and get a hotspot and if your signal isn’t strong spend the money on a quality booster THAT YOU OWN!

  • Well , first I would like to send exceed a big fuck you ! ( pardon my language )

Here is the story step by step of the hell this god awful company has put us thru, they’re ALL ABOUT MONEY AND COULDN’T CARE LESS ABOUT ANY CUSTOMER.
So my fiance I an live out in the ‘sticks’ where finding internet providers seems next to impossible. We call direct tv as that’s who we also have our cable thru and oddly enough when we asked if they had Internet , they told us yes , we thought it was odd BC just a few months –
a year prior they didn’t have Internet for out where we live , but we’re aware businesses change daily.. So we said okay & the sales representative told us everything we wanted to hear, they told us 70$ for the plan we were getting which was 12 gigs of data ( who wants data based Internet?! ) lmao. So long story short we get the internet that the direct TV representative was selling us on, there for we thought we were getting DIRECT TV INTERNET.. Okay two days later the guy comes out to hook everything up and come to find out they couldn’t just run off the satellite I already have hooked up but instead they had to screw one onto the side of our house and then the box said exceed , not direct tv, I still didnt think anything of it , well my fiance wanted internet strictly so he could relax in the little free time from work that he does get and play cod online.. He sat there for no exaggeration 3 hours letting it load BC the internet is that slow !, it was literally by day 3 we were calling and wanting to cancel our ‘contract’ and they absolutely refused to allow us to cancel with out a $300 fee, even though had done breach of contract to many situations , one situation being , my fiance and I NEVER gave direct tv the okay to give ANY third party company (if that’s what you wanna call them) our bank account information, they told us it would be 20$ a month after the direct TV discount we were given and then after the $10 discount from exceed , well our bank account was charged THREE days of having the internet and I’m just like where in the hell do they do that at ?! Last I checked company’s allow people to have their service for a month before charging Bank accounts for the MONTHLY not THREE DAY fee. like I’m cussing quite a bit BC I’m absolutely down right pissed off with these money hungry assholes. Half of the employees are partly stupid and dont know their butt from a whole in the ground , and when asked to provide us with the recorded conversation BC we know they’re in the wrong , we are hhung up on ! We also have an issue with direct tv for throwing my bank account around to third party people with out my permission. Like I’m about to just cancel my card and tell them to kiss my ass on the $300. All we wanted was internet lol , An instead its a night mare. by law in most states you have three days to end a contract with someone and they are even refusing that ! Im half tempted to put a law suit on their asses. So sad at the amount of ppl they’ve screwed over !

    1. the FCC told me 3 days and I have been trying to cancel for 3 days and here it is at 6 days and they still haven’t canceled but charged a card they dont have on file and that I myself never gave them. I didnt start recording my conversations with them until today but wish that I would have, not sure why because nothing will ever happen even if I have proof.

  • I have had Excede/Viasat for 3 tearful years now. I am loyal to a fault. Reliability for above 5 mbps download speeds is 11 %. 89 % of the time speeds are below 5 mbps. 77% of the time speeds are below 2 mbps. After 167 phone calls, and running every design of experiment necessary to prove, the signal being sent from beam 333 to my dish, is not adequate to support a 12 mbps speed as advertised. I have been lied to, run down rabbit holes, denied tier three assistance, and out right treated like It’s all my fault and I’m an idiot, Now I have to figure out what to do with the 100 shares of stock I hold for a company who regards their customers as a waste of their time and refuses to be honest and make reparations for poor performance to their loyal customers. SAD, but YOU’RE FIRED . Enough is enough!

  • We had bad service from the start, the guy who installed the modem in said it was bad, it never got replaced. The speed test is showing 0.20 Mbps. Or less. $150 for the first month and $300 cancellation fee, we are paying extra so a maintenance man does the troubleshooting, nbut exede won’t send one or even listen, they are snakes and lier’s, don’t trust them.

  • New sales people are needed that want to be honest, lied to to get , then treated bad by salesman . Does not work as promised. Did not have a full month. Was not told that price was 100.00 only for three months. Then jumps to 160.00 . Even if it doesnt work please do not get this ,

I have had exede for 5 months and this will be the 3rd time I have had to go without service until they come out with a box. The boxes keep dying. I am unable to work from home or do my school work as I take online courses. Now I can’t complain about the internet itself, it is slow at times, but I live out in the woods so I expect that. What is unacceptable is the reps that give the wrong information and have me sitting home waiting for a technician (missing work) that never comes… Because this is the 3rd time, I made sure I had the date and time correct and I requested an email or some type of confirmation and was told he couldn’t give me that, but my appointment was schedule. Today is the day, I chose the 8-11 a.m. window. It is 11:39 and I was just told no one would be coming as the appointment was set for the following week! I couldn’t believe it and get this.. a supervisor was not available. I AM LIVID! I will be cancelling and going to another provider. If you are thinking about getting this service, I’d advise against it.

  • Bobby Jones did you ever file a class action? I have had the service less that a week and they will not cancel it because it does not work!!!!!! Why would I want something that does not work! Even when the speeds are better it still will not stream movies of an kind to any device.

  • Stay away at all costs. Once I reached my limit, my download speed went to 0.08Mbps. Called Customer service and they said they wouldn’t look into it because I had reached my 150 gb of limited “unlimited” data. Spent over an hour on the phone with 2 different supervisors. So frustrated.

  • I have had no trouble with EXEDE internet. I had trouble a couple months ago. I called customer service. My call was answered. Exede sent out a technician. The problem was fixed. The only problem I have is weather related. NO I DON’T WORK FOR EXEDE.
the service is a whole lot better than AT&T dsl. AT&T DSL was off more than on. So I switched to Exede satellite internet. The best thing I Did. I live too far for dsl from the telephone company f to get speeds I get from exede.

  • Don’t waste your money. My best buddy next door purchased the unlimited package(15-20 mbps)They promise a speed of 15-20 mbps but after they installed his. We are both getting an average 3.3 to 5.6. They do not listen to what you say. I told them 6 times that at 2:30 am there wasn’t any high volume. 6 times he kept telling me at 4:30 pm there was high volume. all sort of excuses why the speed was slow. go with another company.

  • I would never recommend this provider to anyone, my internet sucks. I love watching the wheel go round and round trying to get internet to connect……

  • I have had the service for just over 2 months. I have already had them back out 3 times and Thursday will be the 4th. I get white flashing light on modem and have to reboot several times a day. Tier 1 service is a joke and just wants you to reboot. Worst service I have ever had. I will wind up paying cancellation fee soon. Shouldn’t have to because they are certainly not fulfilling there side of contract!!! There needs to be a class action lawsuit against these people.

  • Okay so they called we got a package they said we could get the TV and their internet services for $54 I got nothing!! don’t go with this company, now it’s a week later and we’re still waiting to have install we had half of install. Guy came n had to take his equipment because our card number was not the same as what they put in their computer system not only is that a problem we’ve had multiple other problems I’ve been on the phone with 20 different people five different offices and I’m over this s*** I would not recommend this company for nobody it’s a waste of time, waste of money and yes they need a lawsuit on their asses SO OVER THIS N WILL BE CONTACTING A LAWYER!!

  • any reputable provider let’s their service speak for itself and doesn’t have to resort to holding people hostage with a contract. They have no incentive to provide quality service as long as they force people to abide by a contract.

  • We just became customers a week ago and this is the worst internet service ever. We are locked into a 2 year contract and wasn’t even told there would even be a contract. viasat/exede came with our direct tv and they never told us about a contract or that it was seperate from our direct tv service. We upgraded from the sorry 12.5 mbps to 25 mbps so that we could watch on demand and do other features that came with our tv service and it still doesn’t work after they told us it would. We are disappointed everyday and will make sure we put the word out about this scandalous internet service.

  • TERRIBLE SERVICE and horrible customer service as well. After three calls and NO service for a month, one week of which we were out of state, we cancelled. The icing on the cake is that they tried to charge my bank account the cancellation fee they think they are owed. We paid by debit card over the phone for then installation and never agreed to have automatic debits taken and never agreed to have them keep our credit card information on file. Never received a copy of the contract either. Now I’m fighting with my bank and they are telling me that I will most likely be charged. Instead of dealing with this matter through the proper legal channels this company doesn’t fulfill their contractual obligations and then STEALS from you.

  • This company had terrible products and service for my family and I. We had the service about a year ago. Best move we ever made was to leave them. Can’t believe they are advertising their company and service again.

  • I am very unhappy with the guy who came to hook me up with internet, my opinion he was deceitful he was in the bedroom hooking my internet up when he came out he said he was finished ask me to sign the clipboard and then to find out I wasn’t even hooked up to the internet I had to go buy things which I don’t think it’s right they never told me I had to purchase anything at Walmart a router box the guy should have never left my house without me not being connected to the internet and now I’m stuck having to pay the bill which I don’t think it’s right he was deceitful

  • I set this for 2/10/18 installation. I was called by the installer to see if he could set it up on 2/3/18 because they had a backlog of orders. Trying to be helpful I said sure. When he arrives he informs me I need to purchase a router’ from him ($80) or not. WHAT? This is the first I am hearing of this. But knowing I can get one cheaper elsewhere, I said no. BUT they started my billing IMMEDIATELY. When I called, it was pretty much “too bad, so sad”.

  • as i find absolutely no difference between DISH and excede satellite and had a slightly better deal cost wise with DISH as we have DISH satellite TV due to rural location i can assure they’re the same bs.
DISH swore the satellite tv deal price stayed the same and when the cost went up10 bucks a month, i cut that PLAN and simply took the 19.99 deal as even cutting them loose involved a twenty dollar fee blah blah BS and i let the satellite internet run it’s course and got a better deal w/excede as saving a few bucks for the same amount of “”time”‘
i HAVE NO PROBLEMS using excede as the satellite internet system and had no problems with DISH the same.
Those depending on the satellite are not going to win cost wise and that’s all there is to it.

  • Worst ever from the very beginning. I live rural, so I do not have many options. I felt I had to go with Exede because of what I could afford. Next move, I will make sure of internet providers before I sign on a dotted line. Yes, internet is that important to me. So back to Exede, here is an outline since the beginning: (1) 1st call quoted me a price saying I didn’t have to pay an extra fee for the equipment. (2) I receive a call about installation, and was quoted a price that included extra for equipment. I balked. They agreed to lower my monthly price by $10 for 6 months. I accepted. (3) Installation never happened on first schedule date. Exede did not contact the installers about our agreed upon date. (4) Finally! Date of installation is scheduled. Raining – subcontractor calls to cancel. That is understandable. Reschedules. No problem. (5) Date of installation, subcontractor calls to say Exede never sent my equipment. Had to reschedule. (6) Installation date comes – subcontractor is supposed to be at my house no later than 5. They show up at 4:59. (Now this problem occurs with subcontractor, not necessarily Exede. But I reported this to Exede because who they hire reflects on them.) They hook up a modem, said, okay it works, but this modem is for someone else, so we have to go pick up your modem. They show back up at almost 9:00 that night. All hooked up – and I think we are moving forward. But I notice the subcontractor removed an old “Dish” satellite off my house, and took it. Granted, this wasn’t in use at the time, but this was not theirs to take. (7) I constantly have to reconnect to the internet when I am online. (8) Not two months into my contract, my internet goes out on 01/30/2018. I pay the extra $5.95/month so that I am not charged for service calls. A service call is scheduled for Friday, 02/02/2018. I make arrangements for my daughter to be at my house. The service call was scheduled between 2:00 & 5:00. 4:59, the subcontractor calls and said it would be dark before she could get here, could she come Saturday morning. I said okay. (9) Saturday morning – nothing. I call her cell – of course, no voice mail set up. I call Exede saying it is 11:00 my time, I have to leave my house, and can wait no longer. Customer service rep says make-up time was for 11-2:00. I tell her there is an emergency, I have to leave, and I do not consider 11-2:00 morning. I have wasted much time waiting for this particular subcontractor. I want someone new. My next appointment is Saturday, 02/10/18 between 11 and 2:00. Gentleman calls me to say he is running late. At around 6:00 p.m., he shows up. Turns out something was wrong with my dish. All fixed. Figured we are good to go. (10) I call Exede to confirm they were crediting me for the 12 days I was out of internet. The customer service rep goes a step further to say I am being credited for the entire month – $70. I profusely thanked him, and said Exede is truly attempting to compensate for all I have been through. (11) A few days later, I receive an email saying my account was charged $166.00. Now I hit the roof. I call billing. I was charged for the service charge – which I pay $5.95/month to avoid service charge calls. Customer service says this was a mistake and would credit my bank account – in about 7 days. So now Exede has use of my money for 7 days – which was an error on their part. My 24-month service contract cannot come up quick enough. I will blast this company publicly for every infraction I receive from now on. I pay for the service – I should get decent service. And I still have to reconnect every few minutes while I am online.

  • worse service ever , I got their service little longer than two years ago . I only stayed with their service for couple of months , it was very slow and costumer service was not the best .i disconnected their service and i had to pay $253 dollars to end contract . then after two years they are calling me to charge me for not returning equipment ? which i did return. they are scammers trying to get free money from costumers . Bad business , worse people .

  • very bad not happy at all. I called today and they have no plans at all . lol they are telling me im stuck with what i got or a early 285.00 fee. PLEASE LOOK SOMEWHERE ELSE FIRST. THEY HAVE NO NUMBER FOR HEAD OFFICE REALLY

    1. So let me try to make sure I understand you correctly….. First off, I see that you wrote this on the 1st of March, that is a few days after they released all of the unlimited plans right….. in fact, I don’t believe they even have plans with data caps anymore…….
Also, March 1st is the day the brand new satellite (Viasat 2) came online. That particular satellite covers the entire US, as well as all of Central America, all of South America, and all of the Caribbean ocean an it’s islands. So where the heck are you to not have “any plans at all”??? Now granted, the new “super high speed plans up to 100mb” are being rolled out area by area so they do not get overwhelmed with orders…… but all areas have the unlimited part now…..
Strangely, you next talk about an early termination fee….. sir, that would mean you currently have service now…… so there certainly are plans where you are….. and since all plans are now unlimited, it is not even possible to “be stuck with what you have”. Try going to VIASAT.COM and putting in your zip code…. there you can see the plans available to you.
Sorry man….. not believing you……. downvoted

  • They tell you if you terminate for cause you don’t have to pay the early termination fee. Both the installer and Viasat said this. Then when your speed drops below .5 and tech support is worse than atrocious, biggest reason I cancelled, they charge you early termination anyway. If you don’t have problems then great, if you do, bend over. Hoping for class action. Also they cut off my service after 10 days when I tried to cancel even when I asked for a refund and was denied. Theft. Worst service, support, complaint resolution I’ve ever experienced. They basically tell you, yeah we said we’d be reasonable but we’re screwing you over anyway because we’re hoping you don’t go to court.

  • My family has gone through a lot, I have lost my house, car and almost lost my daughter because of a child custody case. I had to terminate my services with Viasat because I have lost everything. The only you could say was oh well. Viasat told me when I called and explained what was going on I was told not to worry about anything, just send the equipment back. Then Viasat took $224 out of my account. I can’t afford that..I just lost everything. I called customer service and was told corporate said that was not a valid reason to terminate my contract. $224 My not be much to you, but it is to me and my family. I hope Viasat is happy for taking food away from my family.

    1. So, you are complaining that they did exactly what they said they would do in the contract……. after you broke your side of that same contract? hmm…..

  • Got viasat on the 28th of Feb. 2018. Terminated Mar 5th 2018. download speed was .5 megabeeps. Or none at all. Viasat trying to charge early termination fee. I will never pay this. I have contacted my bank to dispute any charges made to my account, by Viasat Exede or Bluestar, or whatever they call themselves today. Also filed a complaint with Better Business, in Denver Co. These people are crazy.

    1. I am going through something similar. I was promised a certain quality and was never told about the Data Cap. I need internet in order to work and the service was unacceptable. I have cancelled and they told me they would submit a complaint to waive the fees and now I see the charged me anyway. My next step will be to contact my bank. Was your bank able to help you?

  • So let me make sure I understand correctly….. are you leaving a review for a service that you do not have, and never have had? As I read what you wrote you seem to be “guessing” that it would be bad? And in addition… you are comparing this “guess” to a completely different company and service that someone else has (your son) (you don’t have that service either)??? Hmm…. I believe you have completely missed the point of “leaving a review”….. you are supposed to only voice your opinion about things you actually know about and have experience with.
    Downvoted for sure!

  • Absolutely the worst internet company I signed up for cable & internet with direct tv in Dec from Dec to Jan I was trying to figure out how to connect my services direct tv told me i only had cable set up & they didn’t have an internet company that serviced my area & that they didn’t know what internet company I had which was a lie so last week they took $50 out of my account I didn’t recognize the company so I googled it & they told me my account has been active since Jan the technician that came out didn’t inform me of the name of the company or anything then told me to sign the machine to confirm that he came out & I received the modem which I was actually signing a 24month contract long story short I can’t get my money back & can’t connect to the service at all they informed me that I would still have to pay until my contract was up or disconnect & pay the early termination fees

  • Nothing sir! I believe I have brought up some good points…… and some good questions. On the other hand….. do you believe people should leave reviews about products they don’t have? and never have had? and don’t use? and add to that, should they compare it to another product that they dont have and have never had? Well….. for me…. that is just not helpful at all…..

    1. I totally agree with you. I am trying to find out if Viasat is something I should consider (that is if they are available in my area) even though they are more than what I am paying now. As I have something that totally stinks. It was good until my 21 yr old moved back in with me, but she plays games on her ps4, and if I am on anything sometimes I can be on even 1 thing and she lags, and hollers at me to get off, but I digress. I want to know how Viasat is, I understand Sat sucks, but as I live in the country, I don’t have a choice. So I am stuck with the suck vest, so the question is does Viasat suck less than what I have. lol

  • Because they USED TO HAVE data caps…. those all went away as of March 1st. If you had read the reply a bit closer you would see that I have said that.

    1. Actually Viasat is NOT really 100% unlimited usage “Jesse.” After 40-100 of data is used depending upon the plan you have they may (will) prioritize your data behind other customers during network congestion. This info came off Viasat’s site. Unlike my rural WISP, which is truly unlimited Viasat is NOT! My WISP has pretty well ran Exede-Viasat/HughesNet out of my rural area.

    2. I am trying to make heads or tails from these reviews. If I purchase this service, it will only be for the ABSOLUTELY BEST OPTION AVAILABLE. Can someone please let me know if they are using the Platinum Unlimited 100mpbs service and having issues with it? Thanks.

      1. In my area I tell people if they want that plan OK but try to get them in with the 50mpbs. In my experience in my area the 50 will run at about 65 to 70 mpbs and the 100 will run at about 90. So with the 50 you get more than you pay for. Now this all in my area, some area’s might be different. and yes I am a retailer for Viasat, and in our area this works great.

  • No, I do not work for them. But i do believe they have great service…. especially now with the new satellite. I have friends that think the same. What get me here is that everyone uses the same words in all these reviews “worst service ever” “get nothing if this is only options”…. etc. PPFFFTT. really? how many services have you had?

I stream full HD movies and tv shows every day. Works great. Perhaps it is because you are on the low plan (25mb you mentioned)??? that is only designed for 480p or lower….. so if you are getting what you purchased, why are you complaining? Perhaps you should get on the new satellite….. perhaps if you want super HD, you should purchase and pay for the super HD streaming plan??? I don’t know….. makes sense to me……

    1. I have the top tier, no HD streaming, you liar, won’t stream sling, espn games buffer so constantly it’s embarrassing to have guests. This is TOTAL garbage, and you’re delusional or flat out lying.

      1. Hi Randall! Sorry to hear about your experience. Location can play a big part of that, definitely reach out to Viasat.

    2. You seem to be the ONLY ONE singing the praises Exede/Viasat, everyone else is very negative towards them. You say you don’t work for them but I’m beginning to think you’re being compensated, somehow. It seems to me that you shouldn’t have to pay for top tier/new satellite to get decent service. I live “out where God lost his shoes” and know about how limiting the options can be but I also know that satellite is not the only option.

    1. I do, I think, know that this is a great service. I was one of the first to get the internet, years ago. No problem at all. Now I am fixen to see how the home phone goes.

  • I will try and write a rational explanation of why Exede/Viasat is a poor choice for satellite internet. I live in an area where satellite is the only option. I have been a subscriber for well over two years. During that time I have never gotten anywhere near the speeds 25 mps download speeds that they speak of in their advertising. My average is 4 to 6. At night around 8 – 11, it is 2 mps. I have had a new modem, new wiring brought to the house. I have had the satellite adjusted and with no improvement. The only reason I am given is traffic on the satellite. It is misleading advertising to say up to 25 mps when the actuality is no where near it. Tonight I was told the average on the entire network was 3 mps. So it appears to me that Exede does not have the satellite capacity to handle its customers with respectable speeds. They just reel you in with a high number and then the reality is far less. I pay more than $150 month for a high data plan that is so poorly delivered. Don’t be taken in by their immoral advertising.

  • BE VERY CARFUL they will come out and install everything needed to give you internet and than leave. The tech will electronically sign your signature to a two year contract without ever notifying you that there is or was a contract. This leaves you to pay for 24 months of cancelation fees weather you sign a contract or not.

  • I have satellite internet service with this company, presently known as Viasat, but was formerly Wildblue, then Exede, through my Electric Cooperative. I have been with them for many years and have experienced internet better than I was able to get with dialup. I have 12F plan which is a freedom plan where I purchase 12 gigs of data per month and when I go over my speed now is reduced but not totally made unusable. I am still able to surf the web, watch YouTube videos even when I am in breach of my allotment by a significant amount. This better service only started happening a couple of months ago. I have not upgraded to an unlimited plan or received the new modem that Viasat offers with built in WiFi. I am pleased really. My speed from a test I just ran was 5.13 download and 1.06 upload with 614 ping. This is from from Dallas Texas. I’m 135 miles from Dallas. I pay $56 per month and am satisfied. I plan on trying their modem at some point in the future, because I would like to experience really fast speed, but it’s not pressing that I do so. I don’t stream movies or play games. I almost tried Hughesnet a few weeks back, but am glad that I didn’t because after reading some reviews from customers who said they didn’t get the expected 25 Mbps, I decided to stay with Viasat and give them a chance to roll out the new satellite and give it a chance to deliver before getting locked in to a 2 year commitment to HughesNet. Sometimes it pays to slow down, and not bite too quickly especially when the sales people are really pushy and offering discounts to get you to sign up. But competition is good so we will see how it all shakes out. Keep posting your experiences and we’ll keep reading.

  • I would not recommend switching to this company.

If you run out of your internet allotment in any way (even though it is advertised as unlimited,) they then “prioritize” your internet to excruciatingly slow speeds thus rendering your wifi practically non existent. We ran out of 40g of data within a week of use. The other issue I have is that I use a Google Wifi router which allows me to measure data usage and my data measure was at 20g when Exede was telling me I was at 40g. The helpdesk is useless trying to argue this point. We’re going to stick with this since we are in a two year contract until we find a better solution. Hope this helps in decision making.

  • I guess I need to interject. Where did any of you order your system from A Local Full Service Retailer that runs a local business in your community and helps support the local economy or did you order through an 800# or an online portal some where, When you actually order your system from a local retailer and not through the 800#’s of the world or some on line portal. That local retailer is fully vested in giving and explaining things like Data caps, What prioritization of data means on unlimited packs, Video streaming resolution, Early termination fees, What any non standard install charges there may be if the system can’t be mounted on the house Etc…. At the same time if there is a technical issue that work order goes right back to that local retailer. When ordering through 800#’s it may be just someone sitting in a call center just trying to sell something and has nothing vested once the call is ended and the next call rings through. They send everything to sub contracting houses that don’t always do the right things that are in the customers interest.
For that I apologize. Next time you purchase something try staying Local, Ordering Local, Supporting Local. You will get a much better value for the dollar you spend.
    Thank you,
    American Satellite
    A Local Retailer in NY

    1. We believe in supporting local business and went to a local tech store that was advertising high-speed internet in our rural area. The folks at the store were nice, great for stuff like cell phone repairs, but unfortunately they were just representing Exede/Viasat and not authorized to act on their behalf. So when we began experiencing speeds of less than 1 MBPS even though we hadn’t reached the limit (on the expensive “unlimited” plan), or when the modem crapped out on us, etc., the store couldn’t help us and we have had to deal with the company directly. Sigh.

  • Please do not get service from this company. They are so unprofessional and if you call customer service to complain about the quality of the internet, they threaten you with astronomical fees in the event you try to cancel.

  • There service is terrible. My service goes in and out all day and they refused to send someone out. I just cancelled my service. Please anybody that can see this, DO NOT GET THEIR INTERNET you will be deeply disappointed if you do

    1. We just signed up with Viastat and are extremely disappointed with the service and the install. I installed satellite dishes for about a year and this was the worst install I have ever seen. Of course the tech is a third party contractor. To save time and money he ran the cable all the way across my roof about 60 or 70 feet and screwed the cable clamps to the shingles. I instead of through the attic or under my porch like professional installers do. Then he runs it across the ceiling of my porch and down the wall looks horrible. Then drills a hole into dining room, instead of mounting a cable outlet he runs three feet of cable out and leaves it hanging out my wall and put the rubber cap on the whole. This is what you do when you come through the Attic not into a living area. I have to call a roofing company out to give me an estimate on the damage of my shingles my roof is only 3 years old. Then the 17 megabyte download speed won’t even run good video on my phone.

    2. I agree 100% Maliek it sucks!! I’m having the same issues. It goes in and out and it’s slow. I am very disappointed

  • I’ll just sum up our service from Exede/Viasat by saying that they redefine the terms “high-speed,” “available,” and “unlimited,” and not in a good way.

  • Agree. Our speed regularly drops below 1 mbps, we call to inquire, and they have all kinds of creative excuses to try to make it our fault.

  • I am looking for a decent satellite provider. I understand that I will not get the fastest service with satellite, but I just need one that can handle at least 480p streaming with 2 or 3 devices at a time. The only two that are available to me are Hughsnet and Viasat. I currently have Hughsnet, and am not satisfied. My current download speed with a throttled connection is 0.1Mbps, according to Would I have a better experience with Viasat, or should I stay away?

Sorry this isn’t a review, but this is the only place a could find where I could discuss about this without it being partially off topic.

  • I have Viasat & learned the hard way that even a ‘range extender’ uses your data and it used 3/4 of my 10 gb in one night even though it is created to only ‘extend’ the my wireless router signal. Nothing was connected other than the extender that night. I’ve had several issues where I’ve had to contact customer service because the service was not working efficiently or not working at all. A hard rain will knock my service out until it ceases. On the other hand, My son has Hughes Net and apparently, the speeds are even worse and cost is actually more. Until something else comes in, we that are in the rural areas are stuck with satellite internet and Viasat is the lesser evil out of the two…lol. I hear the speed has gotten better in the last couple months due to a satellite launch recently & I am curious to see if the new routers Viasat supplies are performing. I think that only those who have the new/upgraded service with these new routers can access the new speeds via their new satellite.

  • Had Exede for 3 years. Upload has never been over 1.0 — most of the time about 0.6. Had several costly tech visits to try and improve it, but no improvement. I subscribed and bought the dish mostly to upload moderate size photos (3-5 mb) to my photo sharing group. It takes several minutes per photo. Sometimes, can’t complete the upload. A bogus company.

    1. Very strange! I am in an area that had the 12mb speed…… we were actually getting about 18mb speed which is about 50% higher than they even said. Now of course the plans are going to unlimited and such….. but we always had excellent speed.

  • I have had Viasat Service (Formerly Exede, and WildBlue) for 14 years. I’ve seen my Priority data cap go from 17 Gb/month to 25 to 50 and, now 150 GB Priority data and Unlimited service. I also have Viasat Voice (VOIP home phone service.) I am content with the service. Sure fiber would be better but, that isn’t an option where I live. My only choices are Viasat or HughesNet and, for someone who isn’t a night owl, Viasat offers a much better deal.

I have 99% up time, it takes a pretty heavy storm to disrupt my service. As for the 2 year contract, yes it’s 24 months, no trial perion but, you can change your data plan free of charge at any time. If dialup is your only alternative, go with Viasat, learn a bit of data management, read the help articles they offer on their website and, if need be, upgrade to a larger plan once you know what you need.

  • Great service…i don’t know why all these people are works awsome…can run at once..does not lag at all..its the best..soooooo much better then hughnet

  • Absolutely awful service. Have been without internet for almost 3 weeks and the service tech contracted with them has failed to show up for three service calls. There is no supervisor I can talk to, I have lodged complaints that are supposed to be responded to in 24 hrs with no success. I have three businesses that rely on the internet to operate, and with no income it is not looking good. They don’t seem to even care. Criminal that they take money but can’t provide the service people are paying for. If you have an option don’t waste time with these folks.

  • Don’t use this company! I live in the country and the speeds were never as high as they said they would be. We were at the $100 Month price and we were never able to watch movies or use the internet without buffering problems! Had to pay $300 to get out of their contract for crappy service!!!

    1. A really heave storm will knock it out occasionally. Also, if snow or ice builds up on the dish that will knock it out…… It was explained to me like this….. when snow or ice build up and sticks on the dish, that is like a mirror made of water (snow/ice) which changes the direction that the signal is going….. like pointing the dish in the wrong direction. but as far as rain, anything up to a medium rain does not affect it…. has to be pretty strong before I notice anything. Hope this helps.

  • I have never in all of my years experienced service like this. THIS COMPANY IS WORSE THAN DIAL UP! First of all days after order this ridiculous service, my husband was charged 95 bucks that we were unaware of. Next, they told us that 12gb were the highest internet service they had but that information was not true! I spoke to the supervisor for Viasat in the customer service department and they were so rude and hard to understand. I would not recommend this service to NO ONE.

  • Worst service EVER!! PLEASE DO NOT GO THROUGH THE TORMENT. We got Exceed now Viastat in March of 17. First month was ok then no internet, very sporadic, reset the modem, would work for a little while. CUSTOMER SERVICE was a joke, every time, (didn’t keep count but at lease 20 times) we called they tried to sell us more an increased data package. They said the equipment was fine they could see it and everything was working fine. We called the day our time reset and they still tried to say it was because our data package was the lowest. Let me say that this has nothing to do with speed (at this point) we could not connect 85% of the time, they REFUSED several times to send a tech. Finally in DECEMBER (9 months later). We spoke with a customer rep that actuall agreed to sen a tech. The tech came out and found the modem was bad. On his service slip it was written “customer equipment good recommend do not roll on this call”. Service worked fine for a couple of months. Then speed became an issue upload speeds of 0.25 MBPS (fastest) down to 0.08 MBPS upload was actually faster 1.20 MBPS (fastest) to 0.32 MBPS. I saved the techs phone number he checked said everything showed working fine. He said it could be the router so I bought a new router, no change. He came out tested modem and router they tested fine. He changed the modem and he used his router and his computer equipment tested fine still extremely slow internet. He called Viastat they would not talk to him, (their service guy) about it without a work order. We called and after a 1 hour conversation, we cancelled the service. The customer rep would not send a tech, or provide a work order, would not let let us speak with a supervisor. Tried to sell us the higher data package, stated that was the problem. That is all they do try to sell you a higher priced package. They are not customer service they are sales and DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE CUSTOMER, PERIOD!! Then you have to send the equipment back, which meant climbing on my steep roof to get the end piece of the satellite. They send you a box for the equipment, inside is a note that says we want you back let us try to fix what ever is wrong or make up for what we did wrong mention the code WELCOME BACK. So I called, They wanted me to sign a 2 year contract, if I did they would give me a free month they would still not send anyone out, ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?? They really wanted me to sign a NEW 2 yr contract, and PAY THE REMAINDER OF THIS CONTRACT but they would give me one month free I climbed on the roof got the Tria, (end piece of the satellite), modem, power cord and put them in the box. Mailing back ASAP.

  • The satellite does not care what your zip code is, why double price certain rural areas, bronze is now 100 dollars a month for me, i am priced completely out of internet service. There is nothing else here either. Its really awful what these companies get away with.

  • The worst costermer help. The worst internet. Can never get help. They are rude. Im very unhappy .

  • It is the worst internet. The custermer service sucks. They are rude. They can not find you account. Do not there internet

  • I have been a customer for only two months and I’m canceling this month. This is by far the worst internet I have ever had. They never tell the truth like when they tell you that you will get 100gb of data and then give you 60gb They say that your speed will never drop below 5mb after hitting your cap, but I’m lucky to get above 200kb. You can’t stream Netflix or Hulu. Hell, you can’t even watch videos on YouTube at the lowest quality without it taking 1 freakin’ hour to load a 10-minute video. You can’t shop online because the internet always loses connect before checking out. You cant even open your email!
They say that peak hours are between 6 to 10 pm and after that you should get better speed, but you only get good speed between 3AM to 6:30 AM. So, I have to stay up really late or wake up really early just to be online. It’s to the point where I must eat up my cellphone data because this piece of garbage doesn’t work for most of the month. And to add insult to injury, I must pay over $300 to cancel this terrible service! But I rather pay that than have this internet for another month!
So, if you want to pay almost $100 a month for five to eight days of good internet and spend the month with practically no internet for the rest of the month, this is the internet for you. Otherwise, any other provider is better than this!

  • This company is terrible, we were on unlimited plan after cancelling the unlimited plan for some reason we were going to go over data usage this month I tried to go back to the unlimited plan and was told because upper management made a decision we are not able to go back , after 2 phone calls WITH a wait time of 13 minutes someone picking up the line and then hanging up I called right back and waited 20 minutes before another operator picked up the call after originally being told both times the wait time was less than 2 minutes, and still no satisfaction that plan was no longer available , this is terrible customer service, I told the supervisor that I was able to speak with by the name of Sam after a total time if 35 minutes on the phone 2nd call to be assured I would be looking for other companies that offer internet services in our area she was not bothered in the least of losing a goid customer, if anyone from “EXEDE” NOW I’M ASSUMING IS NOW “VIASTAT” wishes to contact me my e-mail is “ ” but I’m assuming with the previous dealings I will not receive any help or feedback

  • This company is absolute garbage, I only had the service for 2 months, the install was a joke, left mud, Concrete, zip ties, and pieces of wire in my grass and didn’t even bury the wire that went into my house. From day 1 my picture quality and speeds were almost nothing even though my speed tests read good. Called 7 times only to get the same process of restarting the modem and rechecking speeds. Multiple times I got a weather outage excuse when there was no weather whatsoever in my area. Along with I’ve used all my priority data at the beginning of my billing cycle and my speed was throttled for other priority users. Finally they sent a tech out to move the dish which didn’t get done because I was told by the tech that it wouldn’t improve anything. Finally I called to cancel and was offered a discount of $10 for 6 months followed by 12 months. Finally after canceling was charged $330 for the existing 22 months left on my plan. Save yourselves the migraine and frustration, going literally anywhere else would be a better choice.

  • We have ViaSat at 2 locations.

Loc #1 was written on March 15th.
Gold, 720 pics HD; 30 down, 3 up; UNLIMITED with no throttle.
    $160/month includes hardware rental.

All of a sudden, we get throttled at 100.
Had rep out and we combed contract; no throttle.
    They continue to throttle.

Loc #2 was written last week for same address (2 rentals).
Gold, 720 pics HD; 12 down, 3 up; UNLIMITED but throttled at 65!
    $210 + equipment

Just checked with them for 3rd location (35 miles away from 2 current locations):

    Loc #3 (primary residence)
Gold, 720 pics HD; 12 down, 3 up; UNLIMITED but throttled at 65!
    $210 + equipment

DON’T THINK WE ARE GOING WITH VIA SAT AT OUR HOME. We use our iPhones as hotspots. AT&T plan gets us 10/month before throttle. With 4 phones, that is 40mb/month at 4-5 Down. for “free”.
I cannot see any value in $210/month for Via Sat.

  • ViaSat is quick to install their junk and quicker to take the money from your account.Out of 2 months I had their internet service,I actually got the use of 1 month.I call the customer service over 10 times to get service restored. I was given a number to call to schedule an appointment. Several of those time I left a message with voice mail. They NEVER called back. As I was canceling the service they took $300.00 out of my checking account for canceling their service.I put a stop payment on it Let them take me to court if they want that money. At all cost do NOT get this crappy internet provider

  • I got it put it and it is terrible. I can’t connect my gaming system to it cause it is too slow! We are paying for 50mbs and are only getting 6! This is the worst internet I’ve ever had.

  • I just had Viasat installed yesterday and I’m already not happy with it whatsoever. I came from charter, so I’ve been spoiled with no data caps or throttling, quick reliable internet. Now I know coming in to satellite internet that I clearly wasn’t going to get charter quality. But I’ve heard numerous people say it has gotten better. We moved, this is why I had to switch internet providers. We went with 25mb. And I haven’t seen speeds get even close to that. I can’t watch Netflix on more than one tv. Hell I can’t use the internet if someone else is watching Netflix. We’ve tried a lot of different things. Hooking up another router, direct connecting, etc. Nothing has worked. If you are looking at buying a house that only offers satellite internet and internet is something your family regularly uses, I would advise not buying the house. You’ll thank yourself later.

  • Pretty funny to see comments about unlimited plans that are throttled, when the plans clearly state that service will or may be slowed when exceeding 40, 60, 80, 100, 150, etc. If a customer is trying to “cut the cable” with this, then it is logical that the cable bill goes away – a typical instant savings of about $100 or more.

If transitioning, say, 100 hours of HD TV viewing per month to satellite internet, that 100 hours of HD throughput will require about 300GB of data. 300 GB of data goes well over the throttle caps of both satellite providers. Just face it! The cost of cable TV and satellite TV is more economical than trying to move everything to a satellite internet connection. Is data throttling used by cable? No. Satellite TV? No. If you want to watch a few movies this weekend, RedBox is a good economical choice (the lines at many RedBox locations are quite long on Friday and Saturday nights). Or spending $5 to $7 for a DirecTV movie is also more economical than trying to hog that HD movies’ 3GB or more of bandwidth from the internet.

Stop trying to view HD movies with an internet connection! You are slowing things down for the rest of us, while making the internet more expensive due to companies attempting to meet the increased demand!

You have the option to transition to cable or satellite TV, while using a lower level of internet service (at a lower overall cost).

Sounds like many are complaining about things they don’t understand. Similar to those who complain that fast food joints should pay a decent living wage, without understanding that such jobs are not meant to provide a living wage for a family. Those jobs are stepping-stones to develop skills and talents which can be used while moving into other, higher-paying jobs. The lack of a living wage should be considered a wake-up call, to pursue further educational opportunities, or to enter a higher-paying industry.

Complaining with an expectation that one’s laziness will be rewarded is certainly not a long-term answer to higher wages, nor lower prices with better service. Spend some time evaluating your real-life options and choose a path which works reasonably well for you. Don’t expect to be given something simply because you want it. Life does not work that way.

  • I have had Viasat Internet for 4 years .I also had the Wildblue service years ago.I have lived in the country for 36 years a long time.I remember when the only internet was dial-up with Aol.When we got the Wildblue service I was happy with that just to have something better than Dial -up.They promised me for years that we would have cable out here(Bellsouth) then later A t and T but they installed it five miles from here in one direction and a couple of miles in another direction so we used hotspots with our cell phones for many years with 3G then LTE hotspots. Then I heard about the Excede Service a few years ago.I went to a local installer. I did not go through Directv even though the local installer made sure I had a discount for the first year with Directv for 10 dollars a month for getting Excede.I started out with 12 up and 3 down and was on the Liberty Plan where I had something called Late Night Free Zone where after 12 pm you weren’t throttled for data use .I thought a few years ago 12 was fast. Then they came out with their own modem and router and I got 25 up and 3 down and really for my location I was blown away. Then I had a 50 gb limit on my plan.I was then offered the Freedom Plan which I have had for a while now 25 up 3 down and 150gb a month.Sometimes my speed is over 35 During the day but it does drop down after 6pm to around 10-12 mbps because that is when people use the internet a lot.The thing is if you get this make sure you call a local installer do not go through Directv.I was upset that when Viasat 2 came out they never offered me the 100 mpbs that was promised and this supposedly is because of the failure of that equipment to not deploy all the nodes successfully so they say.So now we have to wait till Viasat 3 is in service by 2020.Well I am not waiting I am switching to fixed wireless thank goodness someone has come out with something that is 40 dollars less a month is over twice the data and works better with no latency 40 up and 6 down for 60 a month I will take it.Viasat has been good but it is just expensive for what it is.If you have no other choice I say get Viasat over Hughesnet .Thanks Viasat you have been good in the last couple of years but I want out of the dark ages.

  • This is the worst Internet service I have ever had I would compare the speed close to dial up. Our tv buffers for 2 minutes every 30 seconds, it’s gotten to the point we just shut it off.

  • Worst service ever! They lied to use, didnt tell us about the price hick..i cant even run netfilx and a phone at the same time! Take 10 mines for my phone to load a page and thr streaming quality looks like im watching a vhs from the 80s, this service is horrible and they will not work with us at all!

  • I’d like to once again Thank Viasat for putting the shaft to me. First was not letting me out of a contract within 12 hours of install, and now I’ve moved and got Cable, who would of given my buy out money back. had I been able to get a final bill from Viasat. Not able to print it myself as they lock your online account when you close the account, and when I called I was told it would be mailed because they were not able to email to me. NOTHING AS OF YET, its been almost a month?? They had no trouble pulling the money from my account for the buy out, or getting the equipment back. So why couldnt I get a final bill??????????? Thanks for the twice over shaft Viasat, Least you got your money….SIGH worst company ever!!!

  • I am not a Viasat consumer, just a rural person trying to find out my option and want to share my experience with Viasat – which was horrible. So I visit their Website and enter a zip code. It stated there was coverage. I called to speak with a live person to initiate a discussion. You are prompted to enter a zip code. It stated there was no coverage and ended the call. No way to move forward – it was ended. So I tried their CHAT, again first thing is to provide a darn zip. Oh hey they said there is coverage. Hmm, which is it? One system said no and two (online and CHAT) other said yes. My first concern and question is that if the phone system -free to call in – fails to acknowledge I am covered thus forcing a paying consumer to use data online for communications – that is a red-flag. I have to use data that I pay for just to get through to them! PROBLEM and a SCAM. Please be aware. Again, not a customer, was seeking them out and this turned me away immediately if the only means to talk to support is through paying by using data. Again, I could not get past phone prompts via Zip – forcing to go online – data usage people. SCAM

  • Viasat has been pulling the same scam since they were WildBlue. They increase the amount of bandwidth they sell and it works great until they grossly oversubscribe it, and you can barely use it during busy parts of the day. That’s why the two year agreement. No matter how bad the service degrades, you can’t cancel without paying their extortion fee.

  • One of the worst internet providers out there. Out here in rural Florida, we are now lucky to get 1 MBPS. Most of the time, our internet speed is then throttled 30 KBPS. Sometime even reaching 5 KBPS! Overall a very poor service, cannot even watch a YouTube video at 140p without it buffering every 5 seconds! Their version of unlimited data is offering 1 MBPS speed, and then offering almost unusable internet speed. I do not recommend this service to anyone.

  • I switched 6 months ago with all of the promises and hype. In my area I received dial up speeds up to 1.5 mps. Nothing more. I was promised 1 year at the $100 price, and based on online reviews I dumped phone and internet for the unlimited package. I called them and did not do this online which was apparently bad, because I had nothing that made me question the prices that he offered me.

Once the service was installed I called the next day reporting my service issues. I was given the run around, it would get better for a day or two and then speeds would plummet again. I spent months calling in trying to get help. It became where the support techs would hang up on us.

I called two months ago and the person on the other end apologized, said that they would disconnect and I thought I was done. I was working diligently after getting another internet service for a fraction of the price and exponential speeds, when I get an email that they had billed my account and had added a new service that increased the bill by another $10. Now I have checks bouncing because I don’t get paid until tomorrow and I had cut it really tight.

After calling I was hung up on 7 more times in 2 days. I sent an email to the VP of customer service and imagine that, I received a call back. They then began spouting that they had no record of any calls, emails or chats. They had no record that there was a phone call after the service was set up. I am then told that they will be happy to send a technician out to fix it. I told them that I was not interested in the service anymore.

They then said that since I cancelled service after they charged the account that I was not entitled to my money back AND they were going to take the early termination fees ON TOP OF the payment that they were keeping.

My take on this is that this service is overpriced, has no customer service to speak of and they do not care about their customers. I can honestly say that I have never had this level of service from any other company. On a scale of 1-10 they are a negative star. I am glad that someone had some good service, because I could not figure how they got as large as they are with the way they were treating people in my area.

  • Soo it sounds like this internet is not made for any type of gaming. I was trying to help out my neighbors are getting this but we live in a town/ city area. But with how expensive cable internet it figured this is cheaper but if this cant handle the stuff from at times 2 xboxes and 4 cell phones and 1tv going between netflix chatting online gaming Facebook etc I guess they wont be able to do it

  • I have ViaSat / Exede service, been 2.5 yrs and I am content. Not happy, but content… I currently have something a little better, but close to their current Silver 25 plan (grandfathered in). There is cable available via Comcast, but they don’t offer internet (old lines and signal strength is not there and they have no plans to change it with no competition.. imagine that), and as far as HughesNet… well I’ve been down that road and I will never go there again. There is CentryLink available, but they were advertising lower data rates at higher prices.

I do some light online gaming (don’t win much), watch a lot of youtube (you can learn anything from there) and facebook. Lag is there at times (don’t notice it very often at all) and Florida storms will knock out your connection. My experience with their service has been OK, for the most part, problems are answered over the phone. Like I said, I’m not happy, but content.

  • I also got Viasat. This Scam has to stop. I am a disable vet. There should be a class action suet again this company. I am going to inform the BBB, and the attorney general about their criminal behavior.

A “Network Outage” that lasted 18 days cost me literally thousands in lost revenue for my company… this translates to severe lack of income for my family and children heading into winter.
I paid top dollar for this service as I live in the country and companies who service my area are very limited.
After 3 requests for a Supervisor call back…. nothing… not one call from Viasat… no explanation as to why I had no internet service for 3 wks.
I was left w/ no choice but to cancel service w/ them and search for another provider, to my loss.
this necessitated cancelling my card on file w/ them to protect my money they continually attempted to debit during the outage.
This company has little to no regard for their customers…. all they seem to want is to lock in 2yr agreements and take your money…. complete BS.

  • STAY AWAY FROM VIASAT!! they promise that you can watch on demand and do all of this stuff AND truth is if there is more than 1 device connected it is horrible and when there’s only 1 device connected you still can’t watch anything that requires internet period nothing! Even YouTube video’s buffer! I wish I would’ve never ever gotten this no internet is about the same as having Viasat! I tried to just deal with it sometimes you can search for things but that’s about the limit when you call and ask why I was lied to all they can say is well I am not sure but your speeds are right that doesn’t answer anything! This company is a FRAUD they lie to you to get you to sign up then pretty much tell you oh well when you ask why its basically useless I am going to contact a lawyer because I am not receiving anything I was promised I am sick of company’s scamming people that pay their bills!!!

  • Commercial is a joke. If everyone deserves to have internet service they need to make it available to EVERYONE. Us people on low income also have NO way of affording cable of ant kind. Even the lowest price is to much. Change your commercial or really offer to EVERYONE. Make it affordable!!!!!!

  • I am a 66 year old woman and I am angry. ViaSat has lied to me and I am so over this service. I should have stayed with Hughes Net. I am sick of calling and being put on hold, Never have I been able to talk with anyone without a heavy accent so I can better understand and get my questions answered. I received a notice 2 weeks ago telling me my service was going to be turned off because I owed them $38.99.
Now on the first of the month I get my Social Security payment and as soon as I get it, I pay my bills. I logged into my ViaSat account my bill due was $80.80 and I paid it, then on April 9,2020, I receive this email from ViaSat, a gentle reminder, so it said that I had an outstanding balance. I called 855 810-1308 after a long wait on hold a young man whose name I did not catch because of the accent . I went through all manner of stuff, being placed on hold no less than 8 times for varying amounts of time only to come back and tell me that it was a glitch in the system and my bill was current, No worries.
One week later,April 17,2020, I received another email reminding me I have to pay my bill…what bill? What do I owe $38.99 for. I called the customer service number AGAIN only to hear (via a recording) Due to the Covid-19 outbreak wait times might be longer than expected but I could receive a call back and not lose my place in line. Sounded good, so I pressed the key and hung up. I never got a call back.
Next day I was on the phone again I did not request a call back I sat on hold for over an hour only to be talking to another person with a heavy Asian accent only it was a female this time. I went through the whole explanation of what my question was, Why and for what do I owe ViaSat $38.99 for? Now I’m on hold, again while she digs for the answer. Good news, she had an answer, My promo was up I now had to pay $118.99 only when I logged in to pay my bill it DID NOT say I owed $118 it said I owed $80. . I would have paid it all on the first but being on a fixed income I had spent over what I should have and now was hanging on to my last $50.00 till the first.
I explained how I did not have the money to pay at the time to which I was again placed on hold, for a long time. I hung up and received a call back pronto. I was asked to pay $8.00 and that would keep my service connected. Also I needed to change my password and she was going to help me with that. Don’t know about you but I thought passwords were private. She kept insisting so I gave her 4 numbers but I am not happy with any of this. After the conversation ended I logged into my account and paid $8.00 as instructed, this was all done on April 17,2020. On April 20,2020 my service was turned off! I was told I was good till May 8,2020 so much for trust and dependability. My son paid the $30.99 balance this morning and boom my service is back on. Thanks for nothing ViaSat, not only is contacting you like pulling teeth but you are not dependable. I can’t wait for this to be over so I can move on to a better company.

  • It would be nice to watch something other than loading screens. All month long, pretty much nothing but loading screens and buffering. Not to mention they lied about service pricing. We were told a set rate and that it was going to stay set rate, but then they upped it after a certain amount of time which they neglected to mention. They refuse to answer their calls.

  • I have been a customer for only 6 months and I’m canceling this month. This is by far the worst internet I have ever had. They never tell the truth like when they tell you that you will get 100gb of data and then give you 60gb They say that your speed will never drop below 5mb after hitting your cap, but I’m lucky to get above 200kb. You can’t stream Netflix, Hulu or Roku.
So, if you want to pay almost $130 a month for five to eight days of good internet and spend the month with practically no internet for the rest of the month, this is the internet for you. Centrelink has been the best for the Williston area. I only pay $58 a month and its better then 120.33 and I can stream the whole month. SMH and when I started Viast said $80 a month then send a letter that it was going up….

  • This company does not care about its customers. $95 service call to check to see if a modem is repairable. My modem is 9 years old and it quit. I called about a replacement. The only way they would send me a new modem via mail was if I upgraded to a new plan. This company is shady and greedy. I am planning on switching to Hughes net. Wildblue..ViaSat sucks.

    1. Hi, Lizz! We totally agree, a $95 service fee just to check your modem is pretty steep. And we have a hunch that they’re making you upgrade to a new plan because the new modem isn’t compatible with your old plan. But you’re right, that’s confusing and they should be more up front with you about why they’re asking you to switch plans.

We checked out info on HughesNet’s service call fees and noticed that HughesNet also charges for a service visit, but it can be much less than $95. Here’s what we dug up:

HughesNet has a program called Express Repair, similar to Viasat’s EasyCare program. You’d pay $8.99 a month (for one year) for the Basic Express Repair plan, or $12.99 a month (for one year) for the Premium Express Repair plan.

The Premium plan promises to get a technician out to your home by the next business day, which is pretty nice if you need your internet back ASAP.

Just a heads up, though: Even with the HughesNet Express Repair plan, you have to pay a $24.99 co-pay for a service visit if you’ve enrolled in Express Repair for at least 30 days. If you just enrolled in Express Repair, it’s a $99 to $199 co-pay. (Ugh.) Both co-pays are on top of the monthly charge you pay for Express Repair.

That’s a lot of info, but we hope it helps.

If you end up staying with Viasat, you may want to check out its EasyCare program ($8.99 a month) here:
And if you switch to HughesNet, here’s more info (legal terms) on its Express Repair program:

We hope you’re able to get your service issues resolved soon!

  • DO NOT — DO NOT __ DO NOT get involved with this company. They are not truthful. They promise unlimited data on the internet, but shut your service down if you exceed their limit. I terminated my contract with them when I found this out – they charged me $354 to terminate the contract early after not providing what they promised. I had to disconnect their equipment to include climbing up on the roof (60+ yrs old and disabled vet – that was fun) – two months later they hit me for another $43 to disconnect a phone service I never had – they said it was connected — i never had a phone with them – ever. Despite that they had it on my record that it had been connected so refused to remove the $43 — they are the penultimate rip off artists – they charge for service they don’t provide and connect service that you don’t want and don’t know about. Again — DO NOT get involved with these people!

    1. Mike, oh no, that’s awful! Viasat’s “unlimited data” is definitely confusing since they’ll still slow down your download speeds after you hit that “data cap.” I hope you found an internet provider that works better for you.

  • I read these reviews and was broken heated as I really had only 2 choices Viasat or Hughes Net. BUT………… So far so good, I have the cheapest plan and I live in the country in Ohio, and I have been able to do all I have wanted to. Browse the web, listen to music and watch netflix, as well using as my ring cameras . We had a thunderstorm that disrupted service once, but it came right back on afterwards

    1. Wow, Teresa, that’s great to hear! Having only two choices for internet is rough, especially if your only two choices are satellite internet.

  • I was a Viasat customer for 10 years (paying every bill and charge on time), and I would strongly advise you to avoid them if at all possible. The only other provider in our rural area is Hughes Net. T-mobile reached out to us with a hotspot deal a few months ago, and I immediately signed up, terminating our service with Viasat after three trial weeks of excellent internet with the hotspot (less than a third of the price as well). I also paid $15 to put a Stop Pay on my bank account, having read multiple times (during miserable bouts of searching the internet for other ISPs that ended in reading reviews of the company) that they continue to withdraw money from your account after service is terminated, or charge for equipment that’s been returned. The latter happened to me. I returned the equipment a week after I received their pre-labled box (the closest UPS drop off is 30 miles away). I kept the drop off receipt, along with video of me packing the equipment into the box, and pics of the drop off. It doesn’t matter. They’re sending me threatening emails and letters, telling me they’re going to turn me into collections, even after I’ve spent hours on the phone and online chat with them. I have had two agents tell me they received the package two days after I mailed it – then they tell me that they have to talk to their supervisors, and the call is dropped. The other agents I’ve talked with told me that the investigation has been “escalated”, and to call back in 3-5 days. I did, multiple times, and they’ve determined I didn’t return the equipment. Final answer. Despite the tracking number I gave them, despite me calling UPS, who looked up the tracking number and gave me the same time and date that they did,and affirmed that the package was returned and this is a scam – I just got another threatening letter yesterday. I called an agent, again, and they finally agreed to have a supervisor give me a call back. The supervisor was supposed to call me in half an hour. I waited out in the barn (cell phone signal out here is also not the best, and I was terrified I would miss the call) for an hour and a half. No one called. I feel like a complete chump for believing anything that comes out of Viasat representative’s mouth. I’ve filed a complaint with the BBB, and am leaving reviews for other prospective customers – avoid my situation!
